another YA! but this time, it’s solely focused on romance—which is basically my very first romance book to pick up and read after a very long time.

i had slight expectations for this since it was always hyped up on booktok, which i know is a red flag, but there genuinely still good books out there! 

anyway, i wasn’t expecting for something shakespeare-style kind of writing since it’s YA, but it did throw me off a little bit. maybe it was because the story was narrated in first person POV that it made me label it as a “wattpad” esc book. nonetheless, i still continued reading since i loved the main characters and their dynamic so much—like they’re just high achieving teenagers who happen to be in love with each other, but too scared to admit it! a trope that i will forever eat up! oh to be young and in love with your academic rival…

the writing does eventually become better in the later chapters, and i’m glad it did since i thought i would end up hating it. but yes, it still needed some work since it was mentioned that the two main characters had some family problems, especially with julius gong, and i wanted to know more! unfortunately, the author just sort of brushed it over. i mean, i get it, since some readers would probably only care about the romance itself but i personally think it would help flesh out the characters more and make them even more relatable since it was already established that they have crazy schedules as the star students of their school.

either way, i still unexpectedly enjoyed the romance between sadie and julius! and my god… julius… you’re such yearning loser! (lovingly)

It's not my type of book, is what I had to find out the hard way. But I can see why some readers might enjoy it.

I listened to the audiobook and the voice was refreshing and age accurate but it annoyed me too much towards the end how high pitched it was.

Her personality is just way to different to mine and I can't relate to being such an extreme people pleaser and 'having to be best in everything or else I'm worthless' - headset. In such an extreme. Also, why is she so smart and everything but doesn't get a single hint when it comes to things that actually matter?

Plus (spoiler): the way she forgave the one who sent the mails so easily within MINUTES?!

The main characters were so annoying, Sadie especially. I didn’t feel the chemistry between her and Julius at all. They spend the whole book bickering and saying the most outrageously out of line things to each other but i’m supposed to believe they secretly liked each other the whole time. There was nothing cute or romantic about their relationship at all to me. 

The plot was kind of dumb and the pacing was all over the place. The ending and resolution felt really rushed. Just possibly too YA for me.

Such a cute and easy read! Can never go wrong with an enemies to lovers but did wish this was a bit longer. My first Ann Liang book and I have to say her writing is a perfect balance for a YA book.

Easy read, loved that it was also pretty deep, not all rainbows and sunshines. LOVEEEEE a guy who yearns and Julius is the perfect example🤗.

Through this whole entire book I was screaming internally, "Oh my god, this is so good." 

I fell, and I mean, I crashed into this book. It was like I was sitting next to a campfire. Like I was in my safe place. I started this book thinking it wasn't going to be good, but now it has become one of my favorite books. It warmed me up from the inside, and made me feel wanted. As you can see I really liked this book. <3

The only crime of this book is it's too short. I want to see a graduation ceremony and the parents meeting :< 

The academic rivals is too strong in this one. Also Sadie being a big people pleaser is so hard to read because it feels like I'm looking in a mirror lol I'm working on my people pleasing tendecies though.

started this last sunday but i kept telling myself that im in the mood for fantasy lol im so glad i sticked with this bc I LOVED THIS SO MUCH. love me a wonderful & feel-good ya romcom !!! this was such a cutesy & delightful read! sadie’s people pleasing tendencies were so relatable helpfhfgh i feel like i saw bits of my high school self in her. i wanted to hug her so many times bc she’s so young but it’s like she’s carrying the world behind her back. AND JULIUS GONG. he has my heart <3 their chemistry & tension? PERFECTION. i need other authors to take notes from sadiejulius bc this is rivals to lovers done right. the banter, the buildup & the confession are EVERYTHING 😭🤍 

ps. my only complaint was that i wanted to see more of them together post-confession ;( miss ann liang i am humbly asking u to pls give us a sequel 🤲

i’ve always been a sucker for the academic rivals trope, so this book caught my attention right from the start. i found it cute and easy to read, likely because of the playful banter between julius and sadie. however, as time went on, i started to wonder how their love story would unfold, considering they seem to argue constantly. while the banter was fun, i wanted more scenes where they could actually get to know each other, rather than just criticize the assumptions they’ve made. i also think the ending felt a bit rushed, as i wanted more. i feel like we deserved to see his reaction and perspective, which would have added more depth. overall, the rivalry was enjoyable, but i wish their real feelings had been explored more thoroughly.
