This pretty much sums up the book. I loved it so so much. 

“...In short, the reduction of women to something

I don’t care if it’s unrealistic — and in this society, probably not achievable in any way  — I won’t stop until I find my Calvin. I have faith. 

Had anyone asked him, Calvin would have said Elizabeth Zott was what he treasured most in the world, and not because she was pretty, and not because she was smart, but because she loved him and he loved her with a certain kind of fullness, of conviction, of faith, that underscored their devotion to each other. Chapter 4. My absolute favourite chapter. Ever. I loved every line in this chapter. Tbh I loved every scene with Calvin. If I could highlight every line - I absolutely would. 

„In the last few weeks, he and Elizabeth had met six times — twice for lunch and four times for coffee — and each time it had been both the high and low point of his day. The high point because she was the most intelligent, insightful, intriguing—and yes—the most alarmingly attractive woman he’d ever met in his life. The low point: she always seemed in a hurry to leave. And whenever she did, he felt desperate and depressed for the rest of the day.”

 It was a well-known fact that humans believed they were the most intelligent species on earth, and yet they were the only animals that willingly inhaled carcinogens.

Certainly, all decent people believed in God—even indecent people, like her husband, believed in God. God is why they were still married and why their marriage was her burden to bear—because it was given to her by God. God was big on burdens, and He made sure everyone got one. Besides, if you didn’t believe in God, you also didn’t get to believe in heaven or hell, and she very much wanted to believe in hell because she very much wanted to believe that Mr. Sloane was going there.

You have to be positive, happy, upbeat!” “But that’s not me.” “But it could be you.” Elizabeth reviewed her life to date. “Not a chance.”

Why do you think so many people believe in texts written thousands of years ago? And why does it seem the more supernatural, unprovable, improbable, and ancient the source of these texts, the more people believe them?” “Humans need reassurance,” Wakely wrote back. “They need to know others survived the hard times. And, unlike other species, which do a better job of learning from their mistakes, humans require constant threats and reminders to be nice. You know how we say, ‘People never learn?’ It’s because they never do. But religious texts try to keep them on track.”

Wasn’t it obvious that “just in case” wasn’t an option but rather the only option? Life required preparedness; just ask her dead father.

He’d failed once to protect someone he loved. He would not fail again.

“It’s just that we tend to treat pregnancy as the most common condition in the world—as ordinary as stubbing a toe—when the truth is, it’s like getting hit by a truck. Although obviously a truck causes less damage.”

When one is raised on a steady diet of sorrow, it’s hard to imagine that others might have had an even larger serving.

He’d not had much experience with families, but he’d always assumed that being part of one was important: a prerequisite for stability, what one relied on to get through the hard times. He’d never really considered that a family could actually be the hard times.

The more I read historical fiction, the more I fall in love with these books. I honestly thought I would hate books like this before I got into reading heavily but I am finding so many of my favorites in this genre. I loved this one for how much emphasis is on feminism and women's rights. 

In this particular book, we follow Elizabeth Zott and her life as a chemist. Her career is her one true love, bringing her immeasurable happiness. Until she meets Calvin Evans. They fall in love and adopt a dog, Six-Thirty (who has his own incredible perspective in this book). Eventually, they have a child named Madeline. As things happen and Elizabeth Zott grows older, she is offered the opportunity to teach women to cook on television. She is not too thrilled about this as she feels it takes away from her intelligence as a chemist but decides this is the only way to provide for her daughter. I need to try her recipes! This book was so good and it had me hooked from the very beginning. 

Again, the messages about feminism and women's rights are very prevalent in this book. It made this book so good for someone wanting to learn a lot more about how women during those times were being treated. I know that it was not good, but reading about it really puts everything into perspective. I also appreciated that this book touched on women who do not want to be married and do not want kids. I think that there was good representation of that here. 

However, for all the positives this book has, I would still check trigger warnings for SA, attempted SA, death, and grief.

I never thought this story could capture me the way it has done. It broke and healed me at the same time. It simultaneously destroyed and restored my hope for true, devoted love. It’s so utterly inspiring. 

Also the way the invisible-string-theory came to work here, was so beautiful and heartwarming. 

You can bet, that from now on, I will recommend this book to every single person.

I don't really understand why there are so many bad reviews to be honest because I genuinely enjoyed reading this book a lot!

I have certain prejudice towards highly successful novels and approach them with caution. The payoff when I end up enjoying them is excellent - finally, I won't be a hater. (OK, being a hater is also very satisfying, I lied.) Which was very much the case here.

I did find the politics of the novel a little patronising and very, very white. I wish the novel had explored a bit more what a feminist in the 50's / 60's would think, how would they phrase their thoughts and what their priorities would be, how would their interactions with institutionalised misogyny differ from those of women nowadays. While I do not think Garmus' research is without merit, I also found that quite often the conversations felt like a 21st century woman dropped into the middle of the 20th century. In other words, this was very much baby's first feminism type of book. (I also found it weird how often we heard about how pretty Elizabeth is; why are we focusing on her glowing skin so much? Do ugly women not experience gendered violence and bias?)

However, I could not put the book down (meaning: stop listening to the audiobook). I found myself really liking Elizabeth as a protagonist; I liked the supporting cast, too. I was pleasantly surprised by the way the novel was structured - it truly works to elaborate on Elizabeth's journey and help us understand where she is coming from.

It was just all around a good experience. I would suggest if you are picking this up to embrace it for what it is - hardly groundbreaking but refreshingly frank. And please, look up the trigger warnings - there is a graphic rape scene at the beginning of the novel.

I just don’t really get the hype? It was good, not great. It was repetitive and overlong. I liked it; but it wasn’t anything special. It read like a modern day story but was supposed to be set in the 50s, which was clearly necessary to make any of this even mildly believable or interesting. 3.5 ⭐️ & Moving right along..

while i appreciate the messages that's reciprocated in elizabeth zott's narrative, this book doesn't really add a lot of nuance to how women are being treated in society (tw: sex discrimination, sexual assault) and none of the characters felt as memorable as i hope for a book that has receive a lot of buzz last year. i would say i'm slightly underwhelmed with this book.

a bit conflicted on how to rate this book simply because i really enjoyed it but have some issues with it. i'll start with what i didn't like to end on a positive note. my biggest issue with this book is how neat it was. i like my books a bit messier, a bit more realistic. the idealist in me loves that things come together nicely, but it makes me ponder if it worked out just a bit too well. that is my one major issue with the book (aside from moments where it feels like Elizabeth Zott and Mad are simply characters who couldn't truly exist, but they can. you won't catch me saying that they could never exist. to say women like elizabeth zott didn't exist within her time period erases the history of women like her, especially if you already assume they never existed at all).

now on to what i loved about this book. i loved that it didn't end with the one major event it would seemingly end on. i love that life goes on for these characters despite and that we get to watch along until the eventual end. i especially loved the found family aspect, and, while i did just say i hated how neat it was, i loved the character connections because they're real. i especially loved mad coming across wakely. there was just something about their interactions that were simply magic to me, i really couldn't explain why. another thing i enjoyed was elizabeth zott's passion for chemistry. was it on the more extreme side of things? sure, but her passion really spoke to my heart as someone who has no real passion for anything (so i say, it could be argued by others i do have passion). i just love when people are passionate and genuine to the point of being unlikable by others. it warms my heart in a very specific way. the last thing i will discuss here is the relationship between calvin evans and elizabeth zott. theirs was magic. pure magic. there was more chemistry there for me than i find in most romance books lately. while there were moments when i had genuine critiques of their relationship, overall, it was just purely something that felt real to me. it spoke to my hopeless romantic heart. there's not much more to say.

i think at the end of the day, the positives outweigh the negatives for me... i'm probably going to stick to 3.5 for right now, but if i find myself continuing to think of these books and characters i might just have to push it up to a 4. (can goodreads for the love of god get half star ratings)

I was hooked on this book from the start but as soon as she got pregnant, no sir not for me.

“Chemistry is inseparable from life—by its very definition, chemistry is life. but like your pie, life requires a strong base. In your home, you are that base. It is an enormous responsibility, the most undervalued job in the world that, nonetheless, holds everything together.”
First of furthermore, I expected this book will require lot of historical background—or, to be precise, something passed through like what written in American Prometheus about Oppenheimer. But surprisingly, this book was far from that. I honestly didn’t find the urge about thing that called ‘historical’ along the way, it’s more like a memoir about Elizabeth Zott.. with many scientific things as her background. They even didn’t provide an enough reliable resources for this book set on 1960, it’s more like a modern scientist that had life at that time being said. 

The language usage! It’s so humorous and funny, if you walked on the street and found your friend read one of the page from this book, you wouldn’t expect the main character the her whole family was working in laboratory-chemistry-scientific field. It’s like a woman empowerment and how a woman thrive to be mother for her family, her career, and herself. Why do I say so? Because you will find many phrases that showed Zott from her early career until the top. I also love how she made a philosophy chemistry on her class to make (us) easier to understand, or those who have been working on that field finding this book more relatable to close to home. 

The inner-connection to find in her pathway, how the fairytale becomes the base-core of humanity. Two signifies the lead hardness, although pencils don’t actually contain lead. They contain graphite, which is a carbon allotrope. Unlike ink, graphite is erasable. People make mistakes, a pencil allows one to clear the mistake and move on. Scientist expect mistakes, and because of it— they embrace failures. Some of the values that I learned so much from this book as how it is applicable for my study and my life. 

Lessons In Chemistry, like its title, is a lesson we learned about chemistry in life. This book is a diary, a journey, and little punching bag, and a family. Even though the genre bejng said is out of my expectations, but the story is really valuable for my preference. That I eventually understand if life has never been fair, and yet we continue to operate as if it is—as if once we get a few wrongs straightened out, everything else will fall into place. If you need a historical fiction with its detail events of time, this book probably wouldn’t provide you that extend—otherwise, if you look for the scientifically proven of how life works from the PhD and their family (well, it suddenly remind me of my thesis advisor. As how she told me about her family on our discussion… and I found it so endearing! She is so lovely, I adore her so much) then this book was made for you.

Womanhood is a hard and beautiful thing. Strong, intelligent, touching female protagonist? Check! Touching story about love and what a family is? Check! Science? Check!
