I listened to Sadao Ueda's reading of this story and found his voice very expressive, capturing the atmosphere of this story quite well.

The story, told in English, sent chills down my spine. Not in the way that there is a ghost behind the looming rashomon, but in the inherent need of humans to survive. And to what extent? This story, though short, gives the readers more questions to ponder rather than answers.

What separates good from evil? What will it be called then, when you're only doing what you can, in order to survive?

I'm sure that this reads better in the original text. Maybe someday, I'll reread this with the very words that the author intended it to be.
