Unlike "Six of Crows", Crooked Kingdom didn't hit the spot in the same way as its first installment. While most of the characters bring strengths and something interesting to the story, my disinterest lies with some characters such as Wylan, making my overall enjoyment dip every so often.

There's nothing wrong with Wylan inherently — he's their fabulous potion genius and bomb expert, but that's not even what defines him in this story. I felt like this book took a focus on Wylan being shunned by his family, which I didn't think necessarily grabbed my interest. I just didn't much care for him this time around — he didn't feel more of a Crow than the last book.

The plot is both fast and slow. Inej remains captive for around 100+ pages and when she's back, she jumps right in to another plot for Kaz. That's the whole point, of course, but the pacing felt a little off with that whole thing. Some chapters also felt entirely dragged out, particularly with Jesper and Wylan, which is a shame for Jesper because I love him.

Nina notably shines in CK; her new powers are so insanely cool that I felt like she could have done so much more! And of course, it's a shame how her story with Matthias ended...

I still liked this book a lot but it didn't resonate with me in the same way as SOC, which is such a shame as I was so excited for this one and had high expectations. But I suppose my high expectations are the reason for my disappointment at the end of it.

I'm awful at writing reviews but I just need to world to know how amazing this book was. There was so many twists and turns, I never shouted so much over a bit. It was so smartly written, all these schemes and plots must have needed so much thought behind them. The character are amazing, such good back stories and development and emotions. This book was he most exciting thing I've read for as long as I can remember and I'm so so sad that it's over. I NEED MORE

This is the kind of book they should add in to high school curriculums to make kids effing love reading. I LOVED this book. LOVED it. Plot: Taut, twisting, the opposite of lazy. Pace: Perfect. Characters: I’m still crying. Villains: SO MANY. My favorite kind of villain is multiple villains. Dialogue: Incredibly not shitty. I did not cringe once. Do you know how rare that is? It’s fucking rare. Writing: 5x better than I expected it to be and I didn’t expect it to be not good. Setting: Holy shit my head exploded Kerch was exquisitely/brutally drawn and holy eff the god damn map at the beginning!? Stop it. Ending: I am so satisfied and also I can stop weeping. Emotional Pack: See above. Laid on the floor crying for a little bit a couple times. My husband got made at me because I kept audibly yelling and gasping and laughing and see above crying ugly cry sounds. My one complaint: Kaz did a really out of character thing once and it was kind of pivotal to the story that he did it and he shouldn’t have in the first place and it made me mad. But that lasted for like 5 seconds and I don’t really care anymore.

When I finished reading Six of Crows I was really excited to start Crooked Kingdom but also a little worried because I didn't think anything could be better than the first book. But boy was I wrong! This book takes you on a whirlwind ride. The way that this book was written was so clever and I thought that it was absolutely beautiful. Leigh Bardugo was able to write emotional scenes that just make you want to ball your eyes out, action scenes that make you feel like you are sat on the edge of a cliff and plot twists that have you shouting at the book!  I absolutely loved the character development and the direction in which the duology went. I loved every character and just like in the previous book they all stood out and even though they were so different they fit together so well and made for a story that was amazing! “I would have come for you. And if I couldn't walk, I'd crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we'd fight our way out together-knives drawn, pistols blazing. Because that's what we do. We never stop fighting.” The characters are so realistically flawed and they didn't just change from page to page, Leigh was able show progress without it feeling rushed and she has a way of making you fall in love with her characters. There was some emotional scenes that were amazing I'm not going to go into too many details because I really don't want to spoil the plot for those of you who haven't read it yet so i'll just weave some of my favourite quotes into this review instead.  “Meeting you was a disaster.” She raised a brow. “Thank you.” Djel, he was terrible at this. He stumbled on, trying to make her understand. “But I am grateful for that disaster. I needed a catastrophe to shake me from the life I knew. You were an earthquake, a landslide.” “I,” she said, planting a hand on her hip, “am a delicate flower.” “You aren’t a flower, you’re every blossom in the wood blooming at once. You are a tidal wave. You’re a stampede. You are overwhelming.”  The relationships developed wonderfully and I really found it refreshing that they didn't take away from the main story of the book and never became the main focus yet they were still amazing and I was rooting for all of my favorites! “You’re stupid about a lot of things, Wylan, but you are not stupid. And if I ever hear you call yourself a moron again, I’m going to tell Matthias you tried to kiss Nina. With tongue." Wylan wiped his nose on his sleeve. “He’ll never believe it."  "Then I’ll tell Nina you tried to kiss Matthias. With tongue.”  Overall I thought that this book was incredible and had everything an amazing book should. I would highly recommend that you read The Grisha Trilogy before this Duology because some characters from that series do appear in this book and knowing about what happens in The Grisha Trilogy definitely made the experience even better. (I literally screamed when Nikolai made his appearance!) Six of Crows: 5 Stars Crooked Kingdom: 5 Stars

BRILLIANT!!!!! I can’t fully organise my thoughts on this, or even wrap my mind on what I’ve just read. What an amazing awesome book! The characters are *chef’s kiss*; their connections as well. And the plot wow: talk about plot twist followed by plot twist, and all mind-blowingly unexpected. And the emotions, the feelings this evoked… oh my heart. I absolutely loved it.

As much as I enjoyed Six of Crows, I think this story was just a little better. Whereas in the first I was pretty sure the gang would pull their heist off one way or another, the story in this book was a lot trickier and it wouldn't have surprised me if in the end it all would have gone terribly wrong. There were really only two pretty small things I did not enjoy. One was the use of some Dutch sprinkled throughout. I know that Rotterdam (and other cities) were just an inspiration, but it still pained me to see something simple as "good morning" being translated the wrong way. Maybe it was on purpose, but it irked me nonetheless. The second thing is the age of the characters. The truly gory scenes and the romance scenes felt off to me but I didn't really know why until there had been a few of them. Then I realised it just felt weird that some kids from 16 to 18 years old were behaving this way. In my head I had just unconsciously aged them up to their early twenties, which made a lot more sense to me. It was just that their ages were sometimes mentioned throughout the book which would then make it feel weird. Overall though I loved the story and even the characters as far as that's possible for people who do the things they do. It was an ingenious combination of character growth and scheming mixed together into a diverse story which I definitely more than enjoyed.

There are no weaknesses who can’t become strengths. Everything is there. Words. Feelings. Cleverness. Imperfections who built the story and an end who concludes a glimpse of life in another space time.

This book put me through a rollercoaster of emotions. I never knew what was happening next. I was also a little confused on what was currently happening sometime but hey everyone is confused when it comes to Kaz Bekker. The mer size of this book was so daunting to me. It was difficult to pick it up at time and I felt I would never finish it. But let me tell you the last 200 pages was a whirlwind! -SPOILERS- I was a little upset about how the relationships ended. So much build up for very little. Kaz and Inej need either a short story or a whole book!! I need ANSWERS. Wylan and Jesper were adorable and got some closure to their story. DON’T get me started on Nina and Matthias. I was not expecting that at all and I am still broken. I was fully expecting Nina to do something about it but NOOOOO. I don’t know if I can forgive Ms. Bardugo.

𝐸𝑁/𝐹𝑅 Being the second volume’s review, It’ll be principaly compose of spoilers. And also because since I’ve closed this book I only had two desire, screaming or re-read it. Before anything, let’s applause once again Leigh Bardugo’s evolution, whom writing and creativity seem to have made giant step since her first trilogy. I preferred this second book to the first for the simple reason that I found the story’s pacing extremely well done, no point of the plot was left on the side of the road, and we should also point out the fact that she managed to use only the city of Ketterdam as a scene for her story. Speaking of which, I’ve rarely been this happy to have a map and to be able to come back as often as I wanted to, and need to. From a personal point of view, and here It’s more my feeling rather than my reason who speak, I didn’t want to finish this book, it was to such a point that I did not want to move forward in it, I have much better time to read it for that reason. I didn’t want to leave the crew, these six characters that we inevitably ends up considering as companions. But again, Bardugo succeeds this trick with an outrageous address, even when the time comes to let them go and close the book, they continue to live in your mind. (view spoiler)[ Alright, now I can scream. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH. Okay thanks. First of all, WHAT THE FUCK? Killing Matthias you psycho wtf Bardugo ??? Let’s keep some calm. I have to say that I’ve had understand that the story will be an enormous plan on how Kaz will trick the entire city, destroying it, build on it and as he love to say “watch it burn” However, I didn’t see Nikolaï coming to be honest and It was such a good surprise oh my god I love this man so much please give him to me. I love and respect the fact that the author keeps all her universe attached and logical, she never forgets that she has other characters in this world that exist there and can find themselves mixed in the current story. Only little thing that I keep being curious about is Dunyasha’s story. Where did this psycho come from ? You have to know that I love a good business plan, with more economic than psychologic terms. And once again, I was amazed by Brekker giant brain, scheming abilities. As for my first review I’ll go character per character, as honestly they’re the heart of the story. Inej was way more interesting in this book than the first one in my opinion, we were able to appreciate her strength and determination, especially at the end when she say that she’ll not dedicate her life to cure Kaz, that she had more important goals. THAT MY FRIENDS IS THE FEMINISM THAT WE WANT IN FANTASY, THAT WE NEED. Also, I arrived to the conclusion that I only like two type of romance, enemies to lovers, and Kaz-Inej type of things. Jesper my boy, I love you. Sorry, little bit too much I know. But man he was good. Everything was so well done with him. His “sickness”, being addict to gambling, due to his lack of use of his power was perfectly logical and I’m kinda ashamed to say I didn’t see it coming after knowing he was a Fabrikator. And his background story has allowed to give another perspective to the fact of being a Grisha in this universe, you can be the weapon, or the victim. Also, I ship him so hard with Wylan. Talking about Wylan, I’ll not accept any divergent opinion, this man had the best development and I was so glad to have chapter in his point of view. I’m so proud of him, he become a real crow, I’m soft. We’ll not talk about Kuwei that long because to be honest, I didn’t digest this son of a bitch trick to kiss Jesper. at least he understood what he owed to others, his freedom. Nina, darling, how can you doubt the fact that you’re now a powerful grisha ? I mean you can raise the dead? Can you imagine more powerful power ? There will always be dead, nobody can escape it and you can control it. I may sound like a crazy bitch, what’s new? But I found it quite poetic the fact that the Heartrender of the story ends up being heartbroken. Matthias, I’m sorry. I had the sense that his place in the story was less important than in the first book, probably because Ketterdam isn’t his territory like the Ice Court but I quite enjoy seeing him understand that the world can change and what you thought was pure truth yesterday, can be all wrong today. I saw his death coming and honestly, I found it quite ridiculous. But I cried like a baby, and I hope that the wolves were glad to have him back. It may seem funny, but I loved the idea of Pekka’s point of view being the last chapter of both books, giving him the last word and seing how he change between the two was really interesting and I even re-read the last chapter of Six of Crows to see the evolution, chief’s kiss. Kaz, honey. I still want to marry you, but If I can have Nikolaï, I’ll applause to your weeding with Inej. I’m way too extreme today I’m sorry. Am I the only one who thought that his character was less developed in this book? I mean always the most funniest one (yes for me he’s funny) in a sarcastic way, an absolute genius who has deserved his place as a Barrel king, and the fighting scene with the Dregs gave me chills to be honest. I loved the fact that the author made him more human in a way, but also gave explanations for everything he is. You won Brekker, my heart and the game. Okay maintenant je peux hurler. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH Bien merci. Avant tout, WHAT THE FUCK ? Tuer Matthias vraiment Bardugo ??? (hide spoiler)]

*CRIED ALL THE TEARS* *Hello darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again...* I haven't cried this much since The Return of The King, by J.R.R. Tolkien. My heart hurts and I feel so lost. I grew insanely attached to the crows and now that I reached the end of CK, I don't really know what to do with myself. How am I supposed to move on to other books after this? *cries again* Time to go rewatch Shadow and Bone and eat chocolate to calm my nerves. Bye.

It was the first sight of land, the hope of shelter and even salvation that might await you on a distant shore.

But Ketterdam had taught Inej well. If you couldn't beat the odds, you changed the game.

“You're not weak because you can't read. You're weak because you're afraid of people seeing your weakness. You're letting shame decide who you are.”

"Is this really what you want? To be a criminal? To keep bouncing from the next score to the next fight to the next near miss?" "Honestly?" Jesper knew Wylan probably wasn't going to like what he said next. "It's time," Kaz said from the doorway. "Yes, this is what I want," said Jesper. Wylan looped his satchel over his shoulder, and without thinking, Jesper reached out and untwisted the strap. He didn't let go. “But it's not all that I want."

"Meeting you was a disaster." She raised a brow. "Thank you." Diel, he was terrible at this. He stumbled on, trying to make her understand. "But I am grateful every day for that disaster. I needed a cataclysm to shake me from the life I knew. You were an earthquake, a landslide. "I," she said, planting a hand on her hip, "am a delicate flower.” “You aren't a flower, you're every blossom in the wood blooming at once. You are a tidal wave. You're a stampede. You are overwhelming."

"Nina-“ he started, then stopped. “Nina, I am with you because you let me be with you. There is no greater honor than to stand by your side."

“How can you say that? Don't you remember your mother and father at all?" "My mother is Ketterdam. She birthed me in the harbor. And my father is profit. I honor him daily.”

“I would come for you. And if I couldn't walk, I’d crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we'd fight our way out together -knives drawn, pistols blazing. Because that's what we do. We never stop fighting."

Sometimes the trick to getting the best of a situation was just to wait. If you didn't like the weather, you didn't rush into the storm-you waited until it changed. You found a way to keep from getting wet.
