Kiva sure had a lot of plot armor throughout the series 😭. It's still fun a read with all those plot twists. Some were predictable, and some completely stressed me out. The cliffhangers were insane tho.

Now, about Kiva and Jaren's 'romance' – or lack thereof. No chemistry, but I kinda got used to that since Book 1 (or maybe I just missed it 😅). In this one, tho, their silent treatment got so cheesy, I started losing even more interest. Lucky for me, my current no-romance mood made it easier to shrug off.

Where the romance lacks, the friendships shine. The found family vibe with all these side characters is top-tier. It's tricky to make every side character matter, but I was rooting for them all. Especially Cresta (major girl crush) and Caldon (still my favorite), but honestly, take any of them out, and the book wouldn't be the same.

Plot-wise, it picks up right where the last one left off, making it a seamless continuation. Loved the first half with Kiva bonding with Cresta and Ashlyn. Then, we dive into the classic fantasy quest, and I liked about a third of it. It gets a bit slow and inconsistent, dragging on too soon. The ending was enjoyable, but I couldn't ignore how convenient and predictable some parts were😅

Overall, pretty happy with the finale and the whole series. Granted, it's got plot flaws, but as a character-driven reader, I didn't mind – these characters deserve all the love.

P.S. I'll never forgive my boy Caldon not getting the ship I was promised and desperately wanted. 🥲

Literally the best way I could ever imagine a series ending. You faced heart break, love and everything in between all in the span of 439 pages. Lynette you are one hell of a writer. Thank you for telling us Kivas story!!

What a great ending to a really solid, enjoyable series. Everything was tied up beautifully in this book and really did the whole series justice and in the end, I think this was the strongest book out of all three and definitely my favourite. I really loved that this book delved into themes such as forgiveness, having accountability and owning up to your mistakes and working to prove yourself to the people who love you when you've made those mistakes. There were times in this book where I wanted to throttle Kiva and times that I completely understood where she was coming from too, and I think that depth of understanding with her character helped me to connect with her better than I have in previous books.

"Kiva had made mistakes. Terrible, awful, life-ruining mistakes. But for better or worse, she’d always done what she thought was right. Her magic didn’t define who she was, nor did it have the power to decide her fate."

I think the tension between Jaren and Kiva in this book was really great too, the longing slow burn of them warming back up to each other was really well done in this book. Kiva got on my nerves a few times with the decisions that she made, she really was extremely stubborn, to her own detriment at times. But in the end it all worked out for the best and when they finally got the chance to tell each other how they really felt it so heart warming and adorable. I also loved the found family aspect in this book, this theme was a major one throughout the series, even when Kiva found her actual family again her new friends were always there for her much more like a family would be and I think that was lovely to watch unfold. 

The addition of Cresta to this family was an unexpected one but I am glad that Kiva and her were able to become friends after everything they had both been through, especially considering how alike the two were in the end. I am shocked at myself for not catching onto who Cresta was though, it was woven into the story very well and I honestly don't think I would've ever guessed! (hide spoiler

I also really like how this book handled tougher topics again as in the previous books, touching on drug addiction and also on grief and loss.

Overall, I really thoroughly enjoyed this series and I am so glad I read them. They didn't quite touch me as deeply as I wished they would've, I was rooting for them to win but even when one of the characters was presumed dead I didn't feel too upset by this. I think some of that depth was missing from the character connections unfortunately. I also found parts overly repetitive, a lot of Kiva's thoughts repeated the same ideas multiple times which got on my nerves after a bit but I think these concerns I have with this series are my own problem and not a fault with the book at all. I loved that this book raised the stakes again like in the first book, I got a bit bored in the second one where it delved more into politicking but this one had a quest with challenges and that was a really fun journey. I definitely recommend this series to those who liked Shadow and Bone, as I feel this series is very similar to it.

The Blood Traitor picks up exactly where the previous book had left us, with Kiva right back in the place she had so desperately tried to escape. I hadn't re-read the previous books in preparation for this one, but it was fairly easy to pick up the thread again, and there were plenty of reminders here and there of previous events and characters.

Kiva's character has been a constant high point in this series for me, and she continues to shine in this book as well. We find her hitting rock bottom at the beginning of the book and follow her journey to (self-)forgiveness throughout. I really liked how she was portrayed even in her most vulnerable moments, and the fierceness, compassion and loyalty she keeps displaying, and her character arc was very satisfying.

I also loved reconnecting with old favourites (looking at you, Caldon and Tipp!) as well as meeting some new characters and getting to know others better. As in the previous books, the group dynamic works really well and I love the found family trope here: there is always a real sense of connection and true affection between the various characters, and it is just delightful to see it play out even in very challenging circumstances. The antagonists are, by contrast, quite bland and end up being stereotypical villains that could almost switch between themselves without anyone noticing, which is really a shame as they had so much potential for nuance.

One major issue I had with this book was the way Jaren's character changed from previous books. While I completely understand he is also still reeling, processing the traumatic events from the previous book, and coming to terms with the consequences, I found his behaviour towards Kiva to be absolutely horrible and definitely not in line with the Jaren we've come to know in the rest of the series. He is borderline abusive and full on gaslights her, and I found it very hard to accept how this was just glossed over and completely accepted by Kiva in the name of love, using his suffering and trauma to justify his whole behaviour as if she weren't suffering and traumatised herself. I am also not a fan of the miscommunication trope and found it to feature much too heavily here for me to truly enjoy their attempts at reconciliation.

There was also a quest in this book, which I generally enjoy immensely, and it provided a great opportunity to develop the world further, taking us beyond Zalindov and Evalon. I loved the vivid descriptions of the other realms and how uniquely they were characterised. If anything though, the journey felt extremely rushed as, to be honest, did most of the book. We were constantly jumping from one place to the next, to the point that I didn't feel I could really take in all that was happening and the different realms just sort of meshed together. The book was quite literally packed with action, which might be perfect for other readers but didn't quite work for me.

If you read my reviews of The Prison Healer and The Gilded Cage, you'll already know I have a difficult relationship with the plot twists in this series, of which there are many. And this book was no exception. Some of the reveals I had guessed thanks to good foreshadowing, while others seemed to come out of nowhere, but even more so that in previous books they mostly seemed like a convenient way out of sticky situations.

Overall, this was a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy and an enjoyable read despite its issues.

YES! Noni manages to wrap up the series in one final actionpacked book! The plot twist are great and some characters development is just chef’s kiss 🤌🏼 My only complaint is that the book could’ve been longer so some scenes could’ve been more detailed.

I loved the newer side characters, the twists and turns, and the final battle, but there were some things that irked me, hence the four stars.

Everyone had a right to be angry with/hurt by Kiva's actions. Kiva had every right to feel horrible and guilty. However. Jaren. I loved him the first two books, but he made me angry here. He's rightfully upset (she did have a hand in providing Zuleeka the info needed to strip him of his magic) with Kiva and her lies. But, when Kiva goes to talk with him about it, to give her side of the story, he says some harsh things. Which would have been fair--That's not my issue. When Kiva is forced to relapse on angeldust and confesses her feelings, Kiva does attempt to rectify the situation again by telling Jaren not to pity her and that she will respect his wishes. Then, Jaren tells her HE WAS LYING. And 

 upset that she kept avoiding him. While following his wishes. The audacity. I was so mad. Kiva is many things, but a mind reader is not one of them. I would've bought his explanation if he said that he was just trying to protect himself after everything more than just saying he outright lied. He gaslights her for trying to make things right and do what he wants from her. Kiva deserved better than that.

I don't know how much I buy Caldon and Cresta. And no, that's not because Caldon is on my list of book boyfriends and I'm jealous. Not at all. Okay, maybe a teeny, tiny bit. But they both seem too headstrong to be anything more than a flirtationship to me. Granted, it's not really more than that in the book, but it does seem to be heading that direction. 

Ash and Tor I actually found pretty cute. It had the makings of an enemies to lovers, forced proximity sort of thing, minus the staunch enemies part. They seemed to really get along quickly, and Tor and Cresta never really have to answer for leading a rebel army and breaking out of Zalindov, respectively. 

I am also so so tired of female heroines losing their powers. Can we destroy this trope? Please?

Tipp is a sweet baby angel who can do no wrong. I love him. 

Minus a few major frustrations, this was a really good conclusion. I'm going to go stare into a void now.

I was kind of scared to read this but I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED. I cannot put into words how good this series was and how amazing this conclusion was. Also... CRESTA?!?! Did not see it coming. I loved how she became part of the family and did not expect THAT (if you know what I'm talking about). None of the books were slow and this is now one of my new favorite series.

Now THIS is how you write a conclusion!! This story had everything I wanted — a fantastic found family ensemble, angsty but still v. sweet romance, a fast-paced quest plot inside multiple engaging settings & LOTS of action. Whew! The only meh part is that I have a thing about stories in which the heroine sacrifices a lot in order for the hero to get everything he wants which is just 🙄. But if you're looking for a decent, if predictable, forbidden romance/ enemies-to-lovers fantasy this is worth a try!

The only downside to this novel is that it's packed with LOTS of scenes. How is that a bad thing? Well, you'll be getting information about every individual moment, which can make the plot feel sluggish.

In the end, I closed this novel with a smile. I'm happy to carry these characters in my heart.
