Most famous for the remarkable Woodland Cementary which has influenced Tadao Ando and many others, Sigurd Lewerentz (1885-1975) collaborated often with Erik Gunnar Asplund and played an important role at the 1930 Stockholm exhibition, a breakthrough in Modernism. Afterwards Lewerentz went to create an intense personal architecture that has a strong following. The two examples featured in this book, the Church of St. Marks (1958) and the Church of St. Peters (1958), are considered to be his masterpieces. The product of a continuous European architectural and intellectual practice that bridged the Second World War, the work of Rudolf Schwarz (1897?1961) allows a deeper understanding of post-war German architecture. This book examines nine of his religious and secular buildings sited in the Rhineland, which are presented through new survey drawings and photographs. These are accompanied by Schwarz?s project descriptions and his lecture ?Architecture of Our Times? from 1958, which contextualizes his approach. Essays by Wolfgang Pehnt and an interƯ view with Schwarz?s wife, the architect Maria Schwarz, provide further insight into this complex oeuvre.

Adam Caruso is not only a member, together with Peter St John, of the London-based architecture office Caruso St John but also a prolific author who has focused his thoughts on the practice of architecture and who has taken a new look at some of the leading figures of the so-called “other tradition” in the Modern Movement. In “Sigurd Lewerentz and a material basis for form” (1997), “The Tyranny of the New” (1998), “The Feeling of Things” (1999), “The Emotional City” (2000), and “Towards an Ontology of Construction” (2002), we find a new perception of the radical approach adopted in modern and contemporary architecture.

The Feeling of Things

Fernand Pouillon (1912-86) was a modern architect, but he was not a modernist. For Pouillon magnificent old buildings and cities were part of the physical experience of the present. Their conventions and techniques were available to be deployed in new constructions that recall the epic qualities of the past at the same time as attend to matters of the everyday. This book, edited by Adam Caruso and Helen Thomas, is the first English publication dedicated to Pouillon. His contribution to twentieth-century architecture is explored through a rich set of perspectives, including texts by Pouillon himself, Jacques Lucan and Adam Caruso, and photographs by Hélène Binet.
