Impact tests were performed to evaluate the adequacy of 1-3/4-in webbing adjusters proposed for the HBU-12 automatic lap belt. Four tests were conducted at impact levels ranging from 41.8 to 43.7 with impact velocities ranging from 84.9 to 86.7 ft/sec. The tests were accomplished using the Air Force Medical Research Lab's Horizontal Decelerator Facility with anthropometric dummy subjects. The adjusters were installed on the HBU-12 lap belt and tested with an MB-6 double shoulder harness. During the first impact test, the metal clevis of the shoulder harness failed at its attachment point; but the lap belt and adjusters successfully withstood the impact loads. The AFAMRL Vertical Impact Facility is used to conduct research and development efforts in the areas of ejection safety, crashworthiness, and impact injury protection. The facility assembly consists of a pneumatic-hydraulic actuator, a 20 foot rail system, specimen carriage, and several support elements complemented by instrumentation and data reduction systems. This report describes the operating principles of the impact facility, and illustrations of actuator configurations, acceleration and deceleration metering pins. Carriage specimen-mounting pattern and specimen weight limits are provided. Accelerometers, data transmission, signal conditioning, and data recording are documented along with the timing control which coordinates the activation and collection of the electrical, electronic and motion picture photographic coverage. Elements in the operation of the facility operator's and safety monitor's stations during automatic control or manual test mode are discussed. Maintenance aspects are also discussed. The appendices include operating instructions and safety precautions for each of the operators during set-up and operation of the test facility.

The effect of surface-free behavior on work performance in space has been investigated to determine what techniques should be developed to aid the orbital workers. While they performed gross motor activities under weightless conditions, subjects reported their sensory and performance experiences during Keplerian parabolas in a C-131B aircraft in both lighted and dark cabin conditions. Their experiences were categorized into sensation influences upon orientation and body motion influences upon body attitude and position control. Unique examples of short-term weightless behaviors were found and their causes are briefly discussed. Potential applications of these weightless responses to hardware development and to upon body attitude and position control.
