Es gibt keine Gesellschaft ohne Gaben. Nicht Marktprinzipien organisieren soziale Beziehungen, sondern Geben, Nehmen und Erwidern als dreifache Verpflichtung. Im Anschluss an Marcel Mauss legt Alain Caill einen umfassenden Neuentwurf der Sozialtheorie der Gabe vor. Dazu synthetisiert er die seit rund 40 Jahren vorgenommene Bemühung um ein Gabenparadigma, insbesondere die Arbeiten der französischen MAUSS-Gruppe, die für einen Anti-Utilitarismus in den Sozialwissenschaften plädiert. Das Ergebnis ist eine allgemeine Theorie des Zusammenlebens, die es ermöglicht, Alternativen zum Neoliberalismus und zu ökonomistischen Visionen menschlicher und nicht-menschlicher Subjekte zu denken.
