Au printemps 1996, une revue américaine fort respectée - Social Text - publiait un article au titre étrange : "Transgresser les frontières : vers une herméneutique transformative de la gravitation quantique". Son auteur, Alan Sokal, étayait ses divagations par des citations d'intellectuels célèbres, français et américains. Peu après, il révélait qu'il s'agissait d'une parodie. Son but était de s'attaquer, par la satire, à l'usage intempestif de terminologie scientifique et aux extrapolations abusives des sciences exactes aux sciences humaines. Plus généralement, il voulait dénoncer le relativisme postmoderne pour lequel l'objectivité est une simple convention sociale. Ce canular a déclenché un vif débat dans les milieux intellectuels, en France et à l'étranger. Dans ce livre, les auteurs ont rassemblé et commenté des textes illustrant les mystifications physico-mathématiques de Jacques Lacan, Julia Kristeva, Luce Irigaray, Bruno Latour, Jean Baudrillard, Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari et Paul Virilio, auteurs qui jouissent tous d'une grande notoriété aux Etats-Unis. Ils montrent que, derrière un jargon imposant et une érudition scientifique apparente, le roi est nu. Après les vives polémiques suscitées par la version initiale d'Impostures intellectuelles, cette nouvelle édition, revue et enrichie d'une préface inédite (1999), procure aux auteurs l'occasion d'une nécessaire mise au point. Ils y précisent leur point de vue. Ils écartent les idées voire les arrière-pensées qui leur ont été à tort attribuées.

Simple random walks - or equivalently, sums of independent random vari ables - have long been a standard topic of probability theory and mathemat ical physics. In the 1950s, non-Markovian random-walk models, such as the self-avoiding walk,were introduced into theoretical polymer physics, and gradu ally came to serve as a paradigm for the general theory of critical phenomena. In the past decade, random-walk expansions have evolved into an important tool for the rigorous analysis of critical phenomena in classical spin systems and of the continuum limit in quantum field theory. Among the results obtained by random-walk methods are the proof of triviality of the cp4 quantum field theo ryin space-time dimension d (::::) 4, and the proof of mean-field critical behavior for cp4 and Ising models in space dimension d (::::) 4. The principal goal of the present monograph is to present a detailed review of these developments. It is supplemented by a brief excursion to the theory of random surfaces and various applications thereof. This book has grown out of research carried out by the authors mainly from 1982 until the middle of 1985. Our original intention was to write a research paper. However, the writing of such a paper turned out to be a very slow process, partly because of our geographical separation, partly because each of us was involved in other projects that may have appeared more urgent.

En la primavera de 1996 una revista americana de prestigio –la Social Text- publicó un artículo bajo el inquietante título de "Transgredir las fronteras: hacia una hermenéutica transformativa de la gravitación cuántica". Su autor, Alan Sokal, reforzaba sus divagaciones con citas de intelectuales, franceses y americanos, célebres. Posteriormente él mismo reveló que se trataba de una parodia. Su intención era desenmascarar, a través de su sátira, el uso intempestivo de terminología científica y las extrapolaciones abusivas de las ciencias exactas a las humanas. De un modo más general, Sokal había querido denunciar con su artículo el relativismo posmoderno para el cual la objetividad es una mera convención social. Esta parodia desencadenó un intenso debate entre los intelectuales más relevantes de Francia y de otros países. En este libro los autores recogen y comentan textos que ilustran las mistificaciones físico-matemáticas de autores como Jacques Lacan, Julia Kristeva, Luce Irigaray, Bruno Latour, Jean Baudrillard, Gilles Deleuze, Felix Guattari, Paul Virilo, Henri Bergson,...todos ellos autores que gozan de una notoriedad importante en todo el mundo. Sokal y Bricmont muestran como, tras la imponente jerga y la aparente erudición científica, el rey está desnudo. Alan Sokal es profesor de Física en la Universidad de Nueva York. Jean Bricmont es profesor de Física Teórica en la Universidad de Lovaina.
