Die Analytische Philosophie ist eine Hauptströmung der modernen Philosophie. Sie zeichnet sich durch die Klarheit von Behauptungen und Begründungen aus. Diese Suche nach Klarheit hat zum linguistic turn geführt, d.h. zur Dominanz von systematischen Untersuchungen der Bedeutungen von Äußerungen (Sprachphilosophie) und zu den Grundlagen des Argumentierens (Philosophische Logik). In den siebziger Jahren setzte die kognitive Wende ein: Ziel ist es, die geistigen Fähigkeiten zu verstehen, wobei die Sprachfertigkeit nur eine der wichtigen Fähigkeiten des Menschen darstellt. Die Wende von der Sprache zum Geist beeinflusst weite Bereiche der gegenwärtigen Philosophie, indem sie z.B. die Frage ins Zentrum stellt, wie Bewusstsein, Selbstbewusstsein und Willensfreiheit ad-äquat zu beschreiben sind
