Aldo Rossi, a practicing architect and leader of the Italian architectural movement La Tendenza, is also one of the most influential theorists writing today. The Architecture of the City is his major work of architectural and urban theory. In part a protest against functionalism and the Modern Movement, in part an attempt to restore the craft of architecture to its position as the only valid object of architectural study, and in part an analysis of the rules and forms of the city's construction, the book has become immensely popular among architects and design students.

Rossi's urban theory of "collective memory" interpreted through 23 architectural projects The great Italian architect, designer, theorist and printmaker Aldo Rossi (1931-97) galvanized the postmodernist architectural movement in the middle of the 20th century with his unique synthesis of influences such as Adolf Loos, Giorgio de Chirico and Soviet architecture. From his publication Architecture of the City(1966) to his 1976 exhibition Analogous City, Rossi spent a decade developing a theory of urban design that focused on the "collective memory" of a city as an essential element of its urban planning and gave consideration to how buildings and urban areas age over time.
