Alexandre Leupin

The development of a `modern' form of scientific enquiry occurred in the late Middle Ages and under the umbrella of Christianity, but Leupin argues that the desire to quantify and find empirical bases for things goes back much earlier than Galileo and Copernicus. This study attempts to prove that an epistemological break took place within Christianity and that it can be traced back to one particular dogma that is unique to Christian faith, that of incarnation. Through studying the writings of Cicero, Quintilian, St Augustine and many others, Leupin considers the dogma involving the embodiment of God and the relationship between discourse and literature.

Au Diamant, face à la mer, Victor Anicet dit la signifiance de la tombe d’Édouard Glissant ; au morne Bezaudin, Josette Massolin se couche pour embrasser et bénir la terre où l’écrivain naquit. Le cercle de la vie et de la mort semble se clore, mais c’est seulement pour un instant. Car rien n’est vrai, tout est vivant, la mort n’est qu’une éclipse mensongère : l’œuvre vit intensément. Pour en témoigner, une centaine de critiques, d’intellectuels, de philosophes se sont réunis au campus de Schœlcher en mars 2018, autour du thème « Édouard Glissant : l’éclat et l’obscur ». Ce colloque international fut le premier jamais organisé en Martinique pour célébrer l’écrivain en sa terre natale. Toutes les disciplines furent représentées épousant l’esprit d’une œuvre qui ne s’est jamais confinée dans les ghettos académiques et génériques, mais s’est, dès l’origine, ouverte au monde et à la poésie, dans une admirable fusion. Les organisateurs du colloque, Dominique Aurélia, Jean-Pierre Sainton et Alexandre Leupin ont voulu, à travers ce volume, ancrer définitivement Edouard Glissant dans le sable ardent de son pays.

Edouard Glissant, l'éclat et l'obscur

The psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan (1901–81) left a legacy of thought that increasingly commands the attention of American scholars and critics. His provocative essays and wide-ranging seminars and lectures attempted, with remarkable success, to bridge the supposedly unbridgeable gap between the humanities and modern science. For some time his influence has shadowed the theoretical work being done in philosophy, psychology, anthropology, women’s studies, and literature. In Lacan and the Human Sciences eight eminent scholars examine how ideas entered these fields, how well they were understood and adapted, and what fruit they have produced. The editor, Alexandre Leupin, whose introduction reveals the underpinnings of Lacan’s thought, views the book as a blueprint for overcoming the present impasses of scientific and humanistic discourses and their imaginary contradictions. The essays demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of Lacanian psychoanalysis. The relevance of his work to epistemology is considered by Jean-Claude Milner, François Regnault, and Ellie Ragland-Sullivan; to anthropology, by Jean-Joseph Goux; to feminist studies, by Jane Gallop; and to literature, by Dennis Porter and Denis Hollier. The result is a book that points to a new and more pertinent way of dealing, on one hand, with the problems of epistemology and, on the other, with the question of literary theory in the humanities.

Translation of Alexandre Leupin’s award-winning study of Édouard Glissant’s entire work in relation to philosophy. One of the greatest writers of the late twentieth century, Édouard Glissant's body of work covers multiple genres and addresses many cogent contemporary problems, such as borders, multiculturalism, postcolonial and decolonial studies, and global humanities. Édouard Glissant, Philosopher is the first study that maps out this writer's entire work in relation to philosophy. Glissant is reputed to be a "difficult writer;" however, Alexandre Leupin demonstrates the clarity and coherence of his thinking. Glissant's rereading of Western philosophy entirely remaps its age-old questions and offers answers that have never been proposed. In doing so, Glissant offers a new way to think about questions that are at the forefront of Global Humanities today: identity, race, communities, diasporas, slavery, nation-states and nationalism, aesthetics, ethics, and the place and function of poetry and art in a globalized world. This book will elucidate Glissant's theoretical writings, not only in England and in America but also in the anglophone Caribbean, Africa, and India. Alexandre Leupin is Professor Emeritus in French Studies at Louisiana State University. He is the Founder and Codirector (with Charles Forsdick) of the Glissant Translation Project, which has already published three translations, among them The Baton Rouge Interviews, coauthored by Glissant and Leupin. Andrew Brown previously taught French at the University of Cambridge and is currently a freelance translator of French philosophy and social thought, including works on or by Sartre, Barthes, and Derrida. His books include A Brief History of Biographies: From Plutarch to Celebs.
