Una ambiciosa novela sobre el pasado y el presente, sobre el mito y la historia, con el legendario apache Gerónimo como uno de sus protagonistas. La novela arranca con la vindicación de la escritura y la construcción de un paisaje. Ese paisaje es fronterizo –entre México y Estados Unidos–, y en él irán apareciendo personajes, del pasado y del presente. Asoman misioneros, colonos y también los otros, los indios de las tribus ya civilizadas o aún salvajes. Asoma una mujer que huye por el desierto, y un militar que persigue por ese desierto a unos indios que han robado ganado. Y también el mito de Gerónimo, el apache rebelde, y un escritor que recorre esos parajes en busca de las huellas de la historia... Y esos y otros personajes que se van sumando acabarán confluyendo en esta narración total y mestiza, suma de western, relato histórico, épica, leyenda y metaliteratura. El 4 de octubre de 1599, a las doce en punto del mediodía, se encuentran en las canchas de tenis públicas de la Plaza Navona, en Roma, dos duelistas singulares.
