European Cooperation in the Field of Scientific and Technical Research

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th International COST 237 Workshop, held in Lisboa, Portugal, in December 1997 of the European COST Programme on Multimedia Telecommunication Services. The 12 revised full papers presented were selected from 24 submissions. The topics covered include multimedia presentation, QoS Control, electronic commerce, CORBA and DCE, real-time multimedia, multimedia conferenceing, multicast networking, heterogeneous communications environments, and others.

From Multimedia Services to Network Services

This book presents the refereed proceedings of the Second COST 237 International Workshop, held in Copenhagen, Denmark in November 1995 in the framework of the CEC COST 237 Multimedia Telecommunications Services Project. The 15 papers included in revised full versions were chosen from 24 workshop submissions individually solicited from groups of researchers and developers known to be active in the areas of interest. The papers are grouped in sections on multipeer communications, teleservices and applications support, broadband network and transport services, QoS assurance, and multimedia support.

Teleservices and Multimedia Communications

The tremendous development of the communication environment with local area networks and broadband ISDN has opened the way for drastic changes in network performance and has introduced new services. Within the framework of Open Systems Interconnection (OSI), the goal of the ESPRIT project OSI95 (High Performance OSI Protocols with Multimedia Support on HSLANs and B-ISDN) was to design and formally specify a new transport service (and a transport protocol) able to meet the requirements of the new applications and to offer the services available at network and sub-network levels. This report gives an extended presentation of the new networking environment and the rationale for new standards, then presents the various tasks and goals of the OSI95 project.
