Since 2016 AWAY - a project around residencies, under the leadership of Alexandra Grausam, has been highlighting the renowned Artists Residency Program, in which the Federal Chancellery of Austria has been sending local artists into the world since the 1970s. With the exhibition Stories from abroad, in the same year, this important area of Austrian art funding was made visibile to the broader public for the first time. A theoretical examination of the topic took place in talks and a symposium with experts, comprised in the Laboratory, AWAY's discursive program.0The book is divided into five parts, each containing a theoretical text as well as an artistic contributions, statements and diary entries of the participating scholarship holders. While the first chapter is devoted to the historical development of residence programs and the studio program of the Federal Chancellery, the following section describes the extensive and diverse concept of AWAY - a project around residencies. The third part focuses on different destinations and the associated mobility of artists. In den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten sind weltweit so viele Hochhäuser gebaut worden wie nie zuvor. Auch in Europa, wo lange Zeit vor allem Kirchtürme und Schornsteine vertikale Akzente setzten, prägen sie vermehrt das Gesicht der Städte. Die neuere monumentale Architektur ist mit vielfältigen Versprechen, Begehrlichkeiten und Befürchtungen verknüpft. Am Beispiel von Paris, London und Wien diskutiert diese Studie, welche Vorstellungen von Urbanität dabei im Spiel sind. Sie verortet das vertikale Bauen im Spannungsfeld von globalisierten Vergleichshorizonten und städtischem Eigensinn. More high-rises have been built worldwide over the past two decades than ever before. Even in Europe, where vertical accents have traditionally been placed by steeples and chimneys, towering buildings are increasingly shaping the face of cities. This new monumental architecture is associated with a variety of promises, desires and fears. Based on the examples of Paris, London and Vienna, this study discusses the concepts of urbanity that come into play here. It contextualizes vertical construction in the field of tension between globalized horizons of comparison on the one hand and urban specificity on the other.

This edited collection offers an in-depth analysis of the complex and changing relationship between the arts and their markets. Highly relevant to almost any sociological exploration of the arts, this interaction has long been approached and studied. However, rapid and far-reaching economic changes have recently occurred.
