Over the last twenty years, a concerted effort has been made to uncover the history of the Holodomor, the Great Famine of 1932-1933 in Ukraine. Now, with the archives opened and the essential story told, it becomes possible to explore in detail what happened after the Holodomor and to examine its impact on Ukraine and its people. In 2008 the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University hosted an international conference entitled "The Great Famine in Ukraine: The Holodomor and Its Consequences, 1933 to the Present." The papers, most of which are contained in this volume, concern a wide range of topics, such as the immediate aftermath of the Holodomor and its subsequent effect on Ukraine's people and communities; World War II, with its wartime and postwar famines; and the impact of the Holodomor on subsequent generations of Ukrainians and present-day Ukrainian culture. Through the efforts of the historians, archivists, and demographers represented here, a fuller history of the Holodomor continues to emerge.

Since the 1980s the study of genocide has exploded, both historically and geographically, to encompass earlier epochs, other continents, and new cases. The concept of genocide has proved its worth, but that expansion has also compounded the tensions between a rigid legal concept and the manifold realities researchers have discovered. The legal and political benefits that accompany genocide status have also reduced complex discussions of historical events to a simplistic binary – is it genocide or not? – a situation often influenced by powerful political pressures. Genocide addresses these tensions and tests the limits of the concept in cases ranging from the role of sexual violence during the Holocaust to state-induced mass starvation in Kazakh and Ukrainian history, while considering what the Armenian, Rwandan, and Burundi experiences reveal about the uses and pitfalls of reading history and conducting politics through the lens of genocide. Contributors examine the pressures that great powers have exerted in shaping the concept; the reaction Raphaël Lemkin, originator of the word “genocide,” had to the United Nations’ final resolution on the subject; France’s long-held choice not to use the concept of genocide in its courtrooms; the role of transformative social projects and use of genocide memory in politics; and the relation of genocide to mass violence targeting specific groups. Throughout, this comprehensive text offers innovative solutions to address the limitations of the genocide concept, while preserving its usefulness as an analytical framework.

L'invasione russa dell'Ucraina non è soltanto una tragedia, ma rischia di essere anche lo spartiacque tra due diverse fasi della storia europea. Per comprendere le cause e le ragioni di questi avvenimenti è necessario conoscere la storia dei due paesi e l'ideologia di cui sono imbevuti Putin e la sua classe dirigente. Una storia che continua con la seconda guerra mondiale e l'occupazione nazista e prosegue con la fine dell'Urss e le difficoltà degli Novanta, cui l'Ucraina ha risposto guardando all'Unione Europea mentre in Russia si affermava la svolta autoritaria di Putin, fondata sul consenso a una ideologia di potenza radicata nella storia russa e condivisa da una classe dirigente formatasi tra declino sovietico e riaffermazione del potere dello Stato. Una ideologia che spinge Putin a disprezzare un Occidente opulento e corrotto in declino economico e demografico. E che gli fa pensare che sia arrivato il momento per ridare alla Russia il suo ruolo di grande potenza mondiale.
