Maxwell Perkins era un uomo dai modi raffinati, estremamente elegante e garbato, diventato famoso soprattutto come colui che diceva a gente come Ernest Hemingway, Francis Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Wolfe e molti altri “dove” e “cosa” tagliare nei loro romanzi. Durante i suoi anni alla Scribner, lo storico marchio editoriale americano, questo mite personaggio ha “riscritto” la storia della letteratura. Fu lui a scovare Fitzgerald, che prima di incontrare Perkins era un totale sconosciuto con problemi di alcol, e ad aiutarlo nella stesura di tutti i suoi lavori, incluso “Il grande Gatsby”. Nel 1924 Fitzgerald gli ricambiò il favore presentandogli un giovane sconosciuto di belle speranze, con il pallino della pesca e delle corride, di nome Ernest Hemingway.
