Learning How to Feel explores the ways in which children and adolescents learn not just how to express emotions that are thought to be pre-existing, but actually how to feel. The volume assumes that the embryonic ability to feel unfolds through a complex dialogue with the social and cultural environment and specifically through reading material. The fundamental formation takes place in childhood and youth. A multi-authored historical monograph, Learning How to Feel uses children's literature and advice manuals to access the training practices and learning processes for a wide range of emotions in the modern age, circa 1870-1970. The study takes an international approach, covering a broad array of social, cultural, and political milieus in Britain, Germany, India, Russia, France, Canada, and the United States. Learning How to Feel places multidirectional learning processes at the centre of the discussion, through the concept of practical knowledge. The book innovatively draws a framework for broad historical change during the course of the period. Emotional interaction between adult and child gave way to a focus on emotional interactions among children, while gender categories became less distinct. Children were increasingly taught to take responsibility for their own emotional development, to find 'authenticity' for themselves. In the context of changing social, political, cultural, and gender agendas, the building of nations, subjects and citizens, and the forging of moral and religious values, Learning How to Feel demonstrates how children were provided with emotional learning tools through their reading matter to navigate their emotional lives.

Body, Capital and Screens brings together new research from leading scholars from Europe and North America working at the intersection of film and media studies and social and cultural history of the body. The volume focuses on visual media in the twentieth century in Europe and the U.S. that informed and educated people about life and health as well as practices improving them. Through a series of in-depth case studies, the contributors to this volume investigate the relationships between film/television, private and public actors of the health sector and economic developments. The book explores the performative and interactive power of these visual media on individual health understandings, perceptions and practices. Wie haben bewegte Bilder Einstellungen und Verhalten der Menschen in unserer globalen Mediengesellschaft beeinflusst? Sexualaufklärungsfilme versuchten über das gesamte 20. Jahrhundert hinweg, Einstellungen und Verhalten der Menschen zu formen. Sie zirkulierten ins europäische Ausland, in die USA und zurück. Ihr visueller und epistemologischer Referenzrahmen waren die Wissenschaften der Medizin, Pädagogik und Psychologie, was sich auch in der Zuschauerforschung spiegelte. Im Namen der Gesundheit des Körpers wurden stets Gefühle eingesetzt, doch die emotionale Kultur veränderte sich. Im Ersten Weltkrieg sollte Wissen über Syphilis Angst erzeugen und so Soldaten von ungeschützten Sexualkontakten abhalten. Im Weimarer Kino wurde die Bevölkerung gegen eine "falsche Scham" mobilisiert. Im Frontkino des Nationalsozialismus wurde die Angst durch ein unbedingtes Vertrauen ersetzt. Während der Besatzungszeit wurde Verständnis gefordert, gerade für die junge Generation. Diese sollte dann durch "positive Emotionen" in der DDR zur "sozialistischen Persönlichkeit" erzogen, in der BRD zur Selbstführung befähigt werden. Die AIDS-Bekämpfung ließ die Gefühle mit dem zu vermittelnden Wissen verschmelzen. So erzählt die Geschichte des Sexualaufklärungsfilms nicht nur von der Konstituierung, sondern auch von der Steuerung einer globalen Mediengesellschaft. Ausgezeichnet mit dem Otto-Hintze-Preis der Claudia-und-Michael-Borgolte-Stiftung.
