Die Beiträge des Bandes gehen der Frage nach, welche Rolle den Nichtregierungsorganisationen (NGOs) in der Konzeption der internationalen Zivilgesellschaft zugeschrieben wird und wie sich die NGOs den Herausforderungen explizit und implizit stellen. Die Autoren und Autorinnen verfolgen dabei das Ziel, dem Phänomen der NGOs in theoretischen und empirischen Untersuchungen auf den Grund zu gehen und die NGOs in ihrer Wirkung auf die Entwicklung einer internationalen Zivilgesellschaft kritisch zu würdigen. In den vier Kapiteln kommen Wissenschaftler, Experten, aber auch NGO-Aktive zu Wort. Kapitel I beschäftigt sich mit der theoretischen Dimension der ,NGOs in der Zivilgesellschaft', Kapitel II widmet sich den ,Zivilgesellschaftlichen Organisationen konkret'. Hier werden in Innen- und Außenwahrnehmung traditionelle NGOs wie das Internationale Rote Kreuz und CARE International aber auch NGOs der 1990er Jahre wie Attac oder Transparency International vorgestellt. In Kapitel III wird die ,Strategiefähigkeit zivilgesellschaftlicher Organisationen' anhand empirischer Vergleichsstudien überprüft. Das abschließende Kapitel IV leuchtet vor dem Hintergrund der Debatte um die Steuerungsfähigkeit des Staates und neuer Akteure in den Internationalen Beziehungen in der Postmoderne das Verhältnis von ,NGOs und Staat' aus.

Wie reagieren zivilgesellschaftliche Organisationen in den Niederlanden und in Deutschland auf massive Veränderungen ihrer Umwelt? Im Mittelpunkt stehen die lebensweltlichen Bereiche Sport, Kultur und Soziales, die in beiden Ländern in hohem Maße von zivilgesellschaftlichem Engagement getragen werden und klassische Arbeitsbereiche zivilgesellschaftlicher Organisationen darstellen. Doch Sportvereine, Kultureinrichtungen und karitative Organisationen geraten hier wie dort zunehmend unter Druck. Die Gründe hierfür sind zum einen in der Auflösung der traditionellen sozialen Milieus sowie zum anderen in der Zurücknahme der subsidiären Einbettung der Organisationen infolge der Einführung von New Public Management zu sehen. Der Band schärft den Blick sowohl für Traditionslinien als auch für aktuelle Trends in den Nachbarländern, und zwar gerade in solchen Bereichen zivilgesellschaftlichen Engagements, die von der vergleichenden Forschung zu Deutschland und den Niederlanden bisher eher weniger in den Blick genommen wurden.

This book addresses the practice of social innovation, which is currently very much in the public eye. New ideas and approaches are needed to tackle the severe and wicked problems with which contemporary societies are struggling. Especially in times of economic crisis, social innovation is regarded as one of the crucial elements needed to move forward. Our knowledge of its dynamics has significantly progressed, thanks to an abundance of studies on social innovation both general and sector-specific. However, despite the valuable research conducted over the past years, the systematic analysis of social innovation is still contested and incomplete. The questions asked in the book will be the following: 1. What is the nature of social innovations? 2.What patterns can be identified in social innovations emerging at the local level? 3.How is the emergence and spread of social innovations related to urban governance? More precisely, which conditions and arrangements facilitate and hinders social innovation? We explore these questions using different types of data and methods, and studying different contexts. In particular, we focus on innovations that aim at solving problems of the young unemployed, single parents and migrants. This analysis is based on original research carried out in the period 2010-2013 in the framework of a European project with a specific empirical research strategy. Research was carried out in 20 cities in 10 different European countries.

Die Analysen zeigen, dass das bürgerschaftliche Engagement in Anbetracht sich wandelnder Rahmenbedingungen weiter unter Druck gerät.

It also assesses the impact of this sector in Europe which considers its contributions to European economic development, citizen well-being and human development. The Third Sector As A Renewable Resource for Europe presents the findings of the Third Sector Impact (TSI) project funded by the European Union’s Seventh Framework Program (FP7). It recognises that in a time of social and economic distress, as well as enormous pressures on governmental budgets, the third sector and volunteering represent a unique ‘renewable resource’ for social and economic problem-solving and civic engagement in Europe.
