"Voilà longtemps que rien n'est venu s'opposer véritablement à l'ordre des choses. Même, presque tous ceux qui prétendaient mener une critique sociale ne se sont nullement rendu compte de l'anachronisme de leurs armes. C'est pourquoi il n'est peut- être pas tout à fait inutile de revenir à cet appel d'air, à travers lequel, cherchant à ce que le vent se lève, j'avais misé moins sur la poésie proprement dite que sur l'insurrection lyrique qui en est à l'origine et réussit parfois à embraser tout le paysage. Ce qui n'est pas sans danger. S'il est alors possible de voir s'illuminer des pans de réalité insoupçonnée, il n'est pas d'édifice théorique qui n'en soit implicitement menacé, chacun ne tenant dans cette lumière que par l'intensité de ce que ses fenêtres laissent voir ou non. Appel d'air

Qu'on l'accepte ou non, qu'on le prenne comme on voudra, Donatien Alphonse François de Sade (1740-1814) est le plus grand écrivain français. Son aventure littéraire est unique et constamment paradoxale : rayé du monde en 1800, bien que mort en 1814, tout le XIXe siècle le lira et sera occupé de son ouvre, mais il n'en paraîtra pour ainsi dire rien. De 1900 à 1945, pendant que le nom de Sade revient de plus en plus souvent dans le commerce des lettres françaises, ses livres disparaissent à peu près complètement de la circulation. En 1947, on commence à le réimprimer ; on le lira un peu plus - pas tellement, mais surtout l'exégèse sadiste envahira les imprimeries du monde occidental dans une marée de mots sans précédent, sous laquelle l'écrivain, le romancier, le poète exceptionnel disparaîtra bientôt. Que reste-t-il de ces deux siècles de cache-cache ? De ces quarante ans d'incontinence intellectuelle ? Les plus grands, Bataille, Blanchot, Klossowski, peuvent-ils émerger indemnes de l'examen critique qui s'impose de tant de discours ? Et Sade, où est-il ? Qu'avait-il dit, qu'avait-il écrit, au juste ? Magistrale et neuve introduction à une publication générale de Sade qui va peut-être enfin permettre de faire le point, la réflexion de l'auteur vient dégager Sade de tous ses mots entassés sur ses textes. The literary adventure of D.A.F. (1740-1814) is unique and paradoxical. He was widely read in the nineteenth century, but his books disappeared almost completely from circulation in the century. Meanwhile the exegesis of Sade poured from the presses of the Western world in a flood of words in which the writer, the novelist, and the exceptional pet disappeared. In France today, J. J. Pauvert, who considers Sade "the greatest French writer," is publishing a new edition of the complete works with a new introduction by Annie Le Brun. Sade: A Sudden Abyss is the translation of this introduction, which shows Sade as the inventor of an entirely new language through which he fathoms human nature, desire, and relationships of power. In this fresh and authoritative survey of Sade's work as a whole, Le Brun frees it from such critics as Bataille, Blanchot, Klossowski, and Barthes (who see Sade's language as a metaphor for history, society, or writing itself). She asks, Where is Sade himself in these texts? What exactly does Sade tell us? What is obscured when Sade's writing is placed in a "universe of discourse" rather than understood as a manifestation of a life spent in eleven prisons over twenty-seven years? Like a powerful laser beam, her reflections cut through two centuries of intellectual hide-and-seek and let Sade for the first time be seen and read in his own light. Annie Le Brun is a French poet and literary theorist. Her books include Lachez tout, a critique of the French neofeminist movement; A distance; and Les chateaux de la subversion, a study of the Gothic tradition.

The author, who always kept his distance from the avant-garde and from the literary movements of his times (because, in the words of Andre Breton, he was "fully determined to follow no inclination other than that of his spirit") reveals in the aforementioned text that he started out by inventing two phrases that were phonetically almost identical but had very different meanings, to later try to write a story that could start with one of them and end with the other. Using variations of this process he created his two most emblematic works, Locus Solus and Impressions of Africa, which give this exhibition its name. The show analyses the influence that Raymond Roussel has had on modern and contemporary art, by looking at a broad array of works in a variety of formats (paintings, photos, sculptures, ready-mades, installations, videos...) by about thirty different artists.
