Il est considéré aujourd'hui comme un auteur majeur de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Sa vie personnelle fut très mouvementée. Diagnostiqué schizophrène à 15 ans, il fit de nombreux séjours en hôpitaux psychiatres, son instabilité mentale lui apportant à la fois une créativité unique et visionnaire et une vie privée chaotique : il se maria cinq fois. Pour la première fois, cette biographie propose d'aborder l'œuvre de Dick sous le prisme de sa maladie : comment elle a influencé ses écrits tout au long de son immense production. La première partie du livre est une biographie chronologique simple et directe. La majorité des informations contenues dans cette partie sont tirées de diverses biographies, articles, et lettres de PKD. La deuxième partie quant à elle, a pour objet d'examiner en détail la plupart des expériences étranges vécues par PKD. Je pense en effet que la seule manière de pouvoir comprendre cet homme et sa vision du monde est d'analyser comment ces évènements l'ont affectés personnellement. À partir de là j'examine les manières dont PKD tente lui-même d'expliquer ces évènements. La plupart de mes documentations sont tirées de son recueil de journal, Exegesis, publié en Novembre 2011. Beaucoup de ces documents n'avaient pas été publié dans le passé, et ils m'ont permis de me faire une idée plus précise de la manière de penser de PKD. À moins que je ne me trompe, il semblerait qu'il s'agisse du premier livre à analyser les expériences de PKD à la lumière de ses propres écrits en la matière.
