Apollodorus

The only work of its kind to survive from classical antiquity, the 'Library of Apollodorus' is a guide to Greek mythology, from the origins of the universe to the Trojan War. Used as a source book by classicists from antiquity to Robert Graves, it tells the story of each of the great families of heroic mythology, and the various adventures associated with the main heroes and heroines Robin Hard's accessible and fluent translation is supplemented by comprehensive notes, a map and full genealogical tables. Apollodorus Atheniensis

The Library provides in three books a grand summary of traditional Greek mythology and heroic legends. Written in clear and unaffected style, the compendium faithfully follows the Greek literary sources. It is thus an important record of Greek accounts of the origin and early history of the world and their race. This work has been attributed to Apollodorus of Athens (born c. 180 BCE), a student of Aristarchus. But the text as we have it was written by an author probably living in the first or second century of our era. In his highly valued notes to the Loeb Classical Library edition (which is in two volumes) J. G. Frazer cites the principal passages of other ancient writers where each particular story is told and compares the various versions to those in the Library.

Greek mythology is the body of myths and teachings that belong to the ancient Greeks, concerning their gods and heroes, the nature of the world, and the origins and significance of their own cult and ritual practices. "The Library is a meditation on realization and loss through the practice of reading. After his father's unexpected death, the author searched for him in selected books from his father's library in an attempt to access and preserve his (and his father's) memories and thoughts as well as to give shape to questions about a disturbing past. A fugue-structure assembles photographs of books from his father's library alongside the author's prose-poems which respond to his reading of those books. As photographs of books bear witness to the objects with which the father had physical contact, the texts emanating from those objects imagine representations of his thoughts as he read. Photo-collages of forests represent the visual thoughts of the author as he attempted to read his own father, who was often obscured by the enigmas of despair and anxiety. The multiple voices and narrative perspectives encountered in the books from the library expose a series of formative events within and surrounding the father's life. They also inspire the author to create an imagined history in the resulting prose-poems.
