The book shows how digital-interactive television (digiTV) will affect the relation between the broadcaster and the consumer. Standardization processes, technological paradigms, and application development issues will be discussed. The emerging applications, innovations, and future concepts are described in detail. The triangle: content - end-user - technology will be conceptualized to create a vision and to overview provision of services that will be major innovative elments in the world of digital television. From the technical side, eXtensible Markup Language (XML)-based metadata standards are a major element in realizing new innovative concepts in the world of digital, interactive television. This book clearly shows by the introduction of applications and use-scenarios, which conceptual requirements and metadata models are applicable, which metadata subsets are applicable due to resource limitations, which metadata aspects are needed for nonlinear content viewing, etc. The book gives a broad and detailed both visionary and technical overview useful for graduates, engineers, and scientists; and last but not least decision-makers in the broadcasting industry.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th European Conference on Interactive Television, EuroITV 2008, held in Salzburg, Austria, in July 2008. The 42 revised full papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 156 submissions. The contributions cover significant aspects of the interactive television domain including submissions on user studies, technical challenges related to new developments as well as new kind of formats. The papers are organized in topical sections on interactive TV, interactive authoring, personalisation and recommender systems, mobile TV, social TV, new TV environments, iTV architectures and systems, user interfaces and interaction design, user studies, and accessibility.

Changing Television Environments

Since the time when interactive television emerged as a medium for the home environment,ithasbeenpermanentlyevolving.Changingrequirementsanduser behavior, e.g., the demand for being mobile and have access to information and entertainmentanywhereandanytime,arechallenginginteractiveTV.Newkinds of interactive services have to be conceived for the increasing mobile, ubiquitous requirements of the di?erent user groups. In these changing environments, a better understanding of emerging contexts and their implications is essential. This gave birth to the idea for the theme of the EuroITV 2008 Conference: “Changing Television Environments.” EuroITV 2008, the 6th edition of the - ropean Conference on Interactive Television, was organized and hosted by the HCI and Usability Unit, ICT&S Center, University of Salzburg, Austria. The EuroITV Conference Series started at Brighton University in 2003 and 2004. It was followed by Aalborg University in 2005, Athens University of Economics and Business in 2006 and by CWI (Centrum Voor Wiskunde en Informatica) in Amsterdam 2007. We would like to thank all former Chairs for making this greatconference series happen andfor providing us with the opportunity to host EuroITV 2008.
