Fräulein Else is the story of a young woman who, while staying with her aunt at a fashionable spa, receives a telegram from her mother begging her to save her father from debtor's jail by approaching an elderly acquaintance in order to borrow money from him. Else is forced into the reality of a world entirely at odds with her romantic imagination, with horrific consequences.

Arthur Schnitzler (b. 1862 in Vienna) was one of the most influential European writers of the twentieth century, perhaps best known here for his novellas Dream Story and Fräulein Else. He qualified as a doctor but was increasingly driven to a career in writing, resulting in several celebrated plays, novellas and novels which explore the great existential subjects of the modern age: relationships, love, sex, ageing and death. Because his work dealt with subjects considered taboo, he frequently attracted the hostility of the authorities, consequently losing his position as Chief Medic in the Reserve Army and being tried for disorderly conduct. Schnitzler was close friends with Stefan Zweig and Sigmund Freud, who both admired him greatly, and a member of the 'Young Vienna' circle of writers who regularly met at a café nicknamed 'Café Megalomania' - the very same clique and café he satirises so deliciously in Late Fame. Nachdem der Vater, ein Oberstleutnant mit italienischen Wurzeln, frühzeitig in den Ruhestand geschickt wird, zieht die Familie Fabiani nach Salzburg. Da trifft Therese auf Alfred Nüllheim, einen Schulkameraden von Thereses Bruder Karl, der ihre erste Liebe wird. Dieser zieht bald nach Wien, um Medizin zu studieren, bittet davor aber Therese, auf ihn zu warten, um ihn nach Studienabschluss zu heiraten. Thereses Vater erkrankt bald und wird in einer psychiatrischen Klinik hospitalisiert, wo er kurze Zeit später verstirbt. Die Mutter, von altem aber verarmtem kroatischem Adel abstammend, verdient daraufhin den Lebensunterhalt durch das Schreiben von kitschigen Feuilletonromanen. Um eine gesicherte Existenz zu haben, will sie die Tochter an einen alten Grafen verkuppeln, was Therese ablehnt. Als sich Therese in einen jungen Leutnant verliebt und sich mit diesem in eine Liebesbeziehung einlässt, erfährt das Alfred an seinem Studienort. Er beschimpft die Freundin brieflich. Bald entpuppt sich der Leutnant als untreuer Gefährte. Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931) war ein österreichischer Arzt, Erzähler und Dramatiker. Er gilt als Schriftsteller als einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter der Wiener Moderne.
