Pink (d. 1953) is noted for his independent thinking. He was so well read, and had such a photographic memory, that he could give you the page and column in a host of reference works and commentaries. This book shocked the Christian world in 1919 when he published it. He fiercely defends the sovereignty of God, and all the cognate doctrines such as the Doctrines of Grace. It is THE book to give to those just after conversion, and a prime book to give to anyone who defends the free will of man. Pink was a Baptist preacher who held pulpits in England, America, and Australia. His early training was in scientology. His conversion was instant, and complete dedication to the cause of God and truth quickly became evident. This early book by Pink lays Scripture end to end to prove God's control over all persons and events. It is uncompromising, and as such it raises the hackles on the necks of many new students of this doctrine. Persons who knew Pink seldom objected to anything he taught, because he could literally quote hundreds of verses of Scripture verbatim on the subject under discussion. This book may be overwhelming, but it is certain that its many printings have been used of God to convince people of His sovereignty. The Banner of Truth has an edition of this book, but they have abridged their edition by deleting the chapter on Reprobation. If Pink were still alive, he certainly would not have allowed this misrepresentation of his doctrinal belief: that God both elects and reprobates, as Romans 9:21?23 clearly teaches. It is an important stone to guide the steps of those who are not yet convinced of God's absolute sovereignty over all persons and events.

"The need for the study of the Holy Spirit is real and pressing. Ignorance of the Third Person of the Godhead is most dishonoring to Him, and highly injurious to ourselves. The late George Smeaton of Scotland began his excellent work upon the Holy Spirit by saying, ?Wherever Christianity has been a living power, the doctrine of the Holy Spirit has uniformly been regarded, equally with the Atonement and Justification by faith, as the article of a standing or falling church. The distinctive feature of Christianity as it addresses itself to man's experience, is the work of the Spirit, which not only elevates it far above all philosophical speculation, but also above every other form of religion.? The Holy Spirit

The work unto which the servant of Christ is called is many sided. Not only is he to preach the Gospel to the unsaved, to feed God's people with knowledge and understanding (Jer. 3:15), and to take up the stumbling stone out of their way (Isa. 57:14), but he is also charged to "cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and show My people their transgression" (Isa. 58:1 and cf. 1 Tim. 4:2). While another important part of his commission is stated in, "Comfort ye, My people, said your God" (Isa. 40:1). What an honorable title, "My people!" What an assuring relationship: "your God!" What a pleasant task: "comfort ye My people!" A threefold reason may be suggested for the duplicating of the charge. First, because sometimes the souls of believers refuse to be comforted (Psa. 77:2), and the consolation needs to be repeated. Second, to press this duty the more emphatically upon the preacher's heart, that he need not be sparing in administering cheer. Third, to assure us how heartily desirous God himself is that His people should be of good cheer (Phil. 4:4). God has a "people," the objects of His special favor: a company whom He has taken into such intimate relationship unto Himself that He calls them "My people." Often they are disconsolate: because of their natural corruption's, the temptations of Satan, the cruel treatment of the world, the low state of Christ's cause upon earth. The "God of all comfort" (2 Cor. 1:3) is very tender of them, and it is His revealed will that His servants should bind up the brokenhearted and pour the balm of Gilead into their wounds. What cause have we to exclaim "Who is a God like unto Thee!" (Micah 7:18), who has provided for the comfort of those who were rebels against His government and transgressors of His Law. The contents of this little volume have appeared from time to time in our monthly magazine during the last thirty years. They were, previously, sermons which we preached long ago in the U.S.A. and Australia. Here and there is an expression (especially where Prophecy is touched upon) that we would not use today; but since the Lord was pleased to bless them in their original form to not a few of His distressed people, we have not revised them. May it please Him to speak peace by them to afflicted souls today, and the glory shall be His alone. Pink (1890-1953) was a Baptist Preacher in England, Australia, and the United States. He is most famous for his book The Sovereignty of God. After its advent, he, assisted by his editor Mr. I. Herendeen, launched his yearly publication, Studies in the Scriptures in 1921. These continued until his death, totaling altogether 33 volumes of 288 pp. each. Most of Pink's books are taken from these yearly volumes (written monthly in 24 page format).

Comfort for Christians

In "The Antichrist," A. W. Pink shows the development of the idea that the system of the Roman papacy is the Antichrist and demonstrates it as an error resulting from the papacy's persecution of Christians in the middle ages. He argues that the intensity of their experience led persecuted Christians to view the identity of the Antichrist as a system rather than as an individual person. Against this error Pink constructs from Scripture a profile of the Antichrist. He demonstrates expository preaching and gives a clear example of how the Bible interprets itself. The book is a collection of lectures given by him between 1913 and 1923. His argument is laid out in the Introduction. The next two chapters show why he does not believe the Roman papacy can be the Antichrist; Chapters Three through Seven give a profile of the Antichrist's identity; and Chapters Eight through Seventeen are an exposition of the theme through the Bible. Through it all runs Pink's dry humor. Arthur W. Pink was born in England in 1886 and died in Scotland in 1952. He attended Moody Bible Institute for six weeks, grew impatient, and moved to Colorado where he began pastoring a church. He pastored churches in America and Australia then returned to Great Britain. After his death his writings became influential in the American Evangelical churches. He was influenced by Protestant, Calvinist, premillennial dispensational and evangelical thinking. We don't hear much of Pink in American Mainline Protestant churches, probably because he wasn't credentialed by a major institutional church and because of his lack of academic pedigree. Pink, along with Calvin, has recently become "disendorsed" by a fundamentalist group. He was and remains an "outsider." His pastorates were short, lasting about two years. With his wife, Vera, he spent his later years in the Scottish Hebrides and there he enjoyed a ministry of writing. He published a newsletter with about 1,000 subscribers and enjoyed a wide correspondence. Life in the harbor town of Stornoway allowed Pink both the stimulation and the solitude to think--luxuries not readily available to parish pastors. There he enjoyed both continued learning and the freedom to change his views from time to time. It is regrettable that this volume does not include a bibliography. If you're a Bible fan, check out some of his references. If you are an American mainline minister, you probably won't like the book. For you, relativism has probably replaced a practical theology of Good and Evil. If you are a fundamentalist preacher, you probably won't like it, either. For you, the idea that Luther and the Puritans were wrong about the papacy is probably too much to bear. And, if you are an internet addict who loves to guess about the end of times online, this book probably won't appeal to you. For you, it will seem too intellectual, too academic, and you'll probably miss the humor in it. However, for the vast majority of American Christians, Bible fans, and people who want to know what Christians believe this book is a masterful must. The logical flow is flawless, the addition of historical thought to Scripture is interesting, and the certainty of the faith is a welcome comfort in these uncertain times.

In this series of studies we do not propose to confine ourselves to the petitionary prayers of the apostle, but rather take in a wider range. In Scripture "prayer" includes much more than making known our requests to God, and this is something which His people need reminding of, and some of them instructing in, in these days of superficiality and ignorance. The very verse that presents the privilege of spreading our needs before the Lord emphasizes this very thing: "In every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God" (Phil. 4:6). Unless gratitude be expressed for mercies already received and thanks be given for granting us the continued favor of petitioning our Father, how can we expect to obtain His ear and receive answers of peace! Yet prayer, in its highest and fullest sense, rises above thanksgiving for gifts vouchsafed: the heart is drawn out in contemplating the Giver Himself so that the soul is prostrated before Him in worship and adoration.
