However, his appalling misdeeds diminish his glory and consequently, he could never garner the respect and obeisance that a king of Gods would otherwise command! Unfortunately, Indra himself seemed oblivious to the many blots on his character and appeared concerned only about keeping his throne. To maintain his claim over it, he repeatedly abused his power and supremacy, and remained totally unrepentant of his incessant misdemeanours. Ashwathama: Mahabharat ka Shapit Yodha

ब्रज को पानी में डुबा दो!' देवराज इन्द्र ने गरजकर कहा। 'मैं चाहता हूं कि इस छोटे से गांव ब्रज का एक-एक व्यक्ति पानी में डूबकर मर जाए! इन मूर्खों को देवलोक के राजा पुरंदर का अपमान करने का फल मिलना ही चाहिए!' अधिकांश संसार, देवताओं के राजा को 'इन्द्र' के नाम से जानता है। परंतु वास्तव में 'इन्द्र' किसी का नाम नहीं, अपितु देवलोक के राजा की पदवी है। प्रत्येक मनवन्तर के अंत में देवताओं का नया राजा नियुक्त होता है जो फिर उस मनवन्तर का 'इन्द्र' कहलाता है। वर्त्तमान इन्द्र का नाम है - पुरंदर! महृषि कश्यप एवं अदिति का पुत्र पुरंदर, अपनी असाधारण योग्यताओं तथा विलक्षण उपलब्धियों के दम पर इन्द्रासन तक पहुँच तो गया किन्तु उस महान पद पर उसने ऐसा कौन-से कर्म किए, जिनके कारण उसकी छवि कलंकित हो गई और उसे देवताओं व मनुष्यों से सम्मान और विश्वास कभी प्राप्त नहीं हुआ जिसका वह अधिकारी है? यह दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण, किंतु सत्य है कि अपने चरित्र पर लगे इन कलंकों से बेपरवाह पुरंदर को केवल इंद्रासन के छिन जाने का भय है, जिसकी रक्षा के लिए वह आवेश में अपनी शक्तियों का बार-बार दुरुपयोग करता और बाद में पछताता है । इस पुस्तक में लेखक ने विभिन्न कथाओं का ताने-बाना बुनकर पुरंदर के प्रभावशाली किंतु चंचल व्यक्तित्व को अत्यंत रोचक ढंग से प्रस्तुत किया है।
