The Taiping Rebellion of 1850–64 was spread across southern China and ended in the death of around 20 million people. Augustus Frederick Lindley was an English officer who supported the rebels and actively fought for them. The author died at the age of 33, yet he completed and published the greatest anti-imperial work.

The Taiping Rebellion was a widespread civil war in southern China from 1850 to 1864, against the ruling Manchu-led Qing Dynasty. It was led by heterodox Christian convert Hong Xiuquan, who, having claimed to have received visions, maintained that he was the younger brother of Jesus Christ. About 20 million people died, mainly civilians, in one of the deadliest military conflicts in history Augustus Frederick Lindley (Lin-Le to his Taiping soldiers) was a Royal Navy officer who, along with his wife Mary, joined the 1860 Taiping reform movement in China. He trained Taiping soldiers using modern techniques, and Mary became a sniper. In 1863, Lindley returned to the UK. In 1866 he wrote and published this book (Ti Ping Tien Kwoh: OR The History of the Taiping Revolution, including a narrative of the author's personal adventures).

Published in 1866, this two-volume work is a passionate account of the momentous Taiping Rebellion of 1850-64, which spread across southern China, involving the death of around 20 million people. An English officer and supporter of the rebels, Augustus Frederick Lindley (1840-73) actively fought for them and believed devotedly in their cause. Led by Christian convert Hong Xiuquan, they rose up against the ruling Qing dynasty in an attempt to force social, commercial and religious reforms, but were eventually brutally crushed with the aid of British and French forces. Prior to his death at the age of only thirty-three, Lindley produced this accomplished work of historical exposition and anti-imperialism. Volume 2 focuses particularly on the actions and character of General Charles Gordon, whose forces were responsible for many atrocities, but who enjoyed great popularity in Britain. It also details the effects of the British government's Chinese policy.
