Masterful Images The Art of Kiyoshi Saito presents the story of this idiosyncratic artists ascent to international success, whose rustic work possessed an immediacy far from the refinement of a Hiroshige or Hokusai. Travel and recognition brought new subjects, as the artist lingered in France, Tahiti, Mexico, and India to capture scenes that appealed to his sensibility. Encompassing the full range of Saitos oeuvre, the 90 prints reproduced here are complemented by an interpretive essay from Barry Till, curator of the museums Asian art collection.

During the brief Meiji period, Japan underwent am astonishing metamorphosis from feudal state to modern industrial and military power. The national policy of isolationism, sakoku, initiated in 1639, was abruptly challenged in 1853 when Commodore Matthew C. Perry sailed into Tokyo Bay with four awe-inspiring iron vessels, locally known as "black ships." Forced into trade treaties, the Japanese state rushed to modernize under the enlightened leadership of Emperor Meiji.The popular woodblock prints of the Meiji period were snapshots of a modern society in the making. Those reproduced in Japan Awakens, all from the collection of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, show everything from political events and wars to intimate domestic scenes. Three thematic essays by Barry Till trace the links between the revival of imperial rule and forces both national and international, connecting formal and aesthetic changes in fine-art prints to these events.

With her perfect balance of beauty, conversance with the arts, and all-around cultivation, the Japanese geisha was a living work of art. And, from the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century, these ultimate courtesans were fashion trendsetters whose gorgeous costumes and elegant manner exuded avant-garde style (iki). The celebrities and supermodels of their time, geisha were the primary arbiters of kimono fashion.Ichimaru (1906-1997) combined her experience as a geisha with an extraordinary talent as a vocalist and musician to become a unique figure in the social history of twentieth-century Japan. Determined to distinguish herself, she studied music with the best teachers to be found in Tokyo's floating world, or pleasure district. Ichimaru secured a recording contract in 1931 and never looked back as she won international renown.In keeping with the geisha tradition of elegant dress, Ichimaru accumulated a striking collection of kimono over the course of her long career. After her death, the collection was given to the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. In this colorful, well-informed, and satisfying little book, three members of the gallery's curatorial staff tell lchimaru's life story and place it in the context of the floating world and the larger world of Japanese culture. They also provide detailed information on kimono construction, materials, dyeing and stitching techniques, styles and the cultural connotations evoked by those styles, and the secret language of kimono imagery. Edo is the ancient name for the city of Tokyo and covers the historic period from 1603 until 1868 when Japan was ruled by the shoguns. This military class transformed Edo from a fishing village into one of the largest, most populous and most cultivated cities in the world. This magnificently illustrated publication features a wide variety of Edo art, notably paintings, prints, ceramics, lacquerwares, metalwares, textiles, religious art and samurai paraphernalia. These works, and especially the prints known as ukiyo-e, reveal the life and customs of the Edo period, offering unrivaled material for the study of daily life across the breadth of Edo period Japan.

The strictest and purest of poetic forms, the Japanese haiku contains in its seventeen sound characters (on) a reference to a season as well as a distinct pause or interruption.
