Plato's Republic

Plato is arguably the most important philosopher in history, the man who documented the teachings of Socrates for posterity and the one who taught Aristotle at his legendary Academy. One of Plato's most famous works is The Symposium, a Socratic dialogue that takes place as a big dinner conversation led by Socrates himself. Over the course of the dinner party, Socrates comes up with the definition and meaning of love. Those interested in the historicity of Socrates have combed The Symposium for clues as to its authenticity, and whether the dinner actually took place. However, Plato makes mention of the division of Arcadia after the destruction of Mantinea, which occurred in 384 B.C., and Socrates had already been poisoned over a decade earlier. Others have noted the Symposium is similar in style and topic with Plato's Phaedrus. They are the only two dialogues of Plato's that deal with love as a topic.

The Symposium is a philosophical dialogue written by Plato sometime after 385 BC. It is a discussion on the nature of love, taking the form of a group of speeches, both satirical and serious, given by a group of men at a symposium or a wine drinking gathering at the house of the tragedian Agathon at Athens.

The Apology, Phaedo, and Crito of Plato

Phaedrus is widely recognized as one of Plato's most profound and beautiful works. It takes the form of a dialogue between Socrates and Phaedrus and its ostensible subject is love, especially homoerotic love. Socrates reveals it to be a kind of divine madness that can allow our souls to growwings and soar to their greatest heights. Then the conversation changes direction and turns to a discussion of rhetoric, which must be based on truth passionately sought, thus allying it to philosophy. The dialogue closes by denigrating the value of the written word in any context, compared to theliving teaching of a Socratic philosopher.The shifts of topic and register have given rise to doubts about the unity of the dialogue, doubts which are addressed in the introduction to this volume. Full explanatory notes also elucidate issues throughout the dialogue that might puzzle a modern reader.

Phaedrus

- Translated with an introduction by Benjamin Jowett. The Apology is Plato's version of the speech given by Socrates as he defended himself in 399 BC against the charges of "corrupting the young, and by not believing in the gods in whom the city believes, but in other daimonia that are novel" (24b). "Apology" here has its earlier meaning (now usually expressed by the word "apologia") of speaking in defense of a cause or of one's beliefs or actions. The general term apology, in context to literature, defends a world from attack (opposite of satire-which attacks the world). Xenophon, who wrote his own Apology of Socrates, indicates that a number of writers had published accounts of Socrates' defense. According to one prominent scholar, "Writing designed to clear Socrates' name was doubtless a particular feature of the decade or so following 399 BC". Many scholars guess that Plato's Apology was one of the first, if not the very first, dialogues Plato wrote, though there is little if any evidence. Plato's Apology is commonly regarded as the most reliable source of information about the historical Socrates. Except for two brief exchanges with Meletus (at 24d-25d and 26b-27d), where the monologue becomes a dialogue, the text is written in the first person from Socrates' point of view, as though it were Socrates' actual speech at the trial. During the course of the speech, Socrates twice mentions Plato as being present (at 34a and 38b). There is, however, no real way of knowing how closely Socrates' words in the Apology match those of Socrates at the actual trial, even if it was Plato's intention to be accurate in this respect. One contemporary criticism of Plato's Apology is perhaps implied by the opening paragraphs of Xenophon's Apology, assuming that the former antedated the latter; Xenophon remarks that previous writers had failed to make clear the reason for Socrates' boastful talk in the face of the death penalty. Xenophon's account disagrees in some other respects with the details of Plato's Apology, but he nowhere explicitly claims it to be inaccurate.

Philebus belongs to the third dialogue group of Plato known as Sophistes. Its linguistic affinities indicate that it was composed after 360 B.C. The dialogues deal with the relations of pleasure and knowledge. These philosophical discussions were originally carried out between three great philosophers, namely Philebus, Socrates and Protarchus.
