This IBM® RedpaperTM publication describes the concepts and functions of the IBM System Storage® DS8000® I/O Priority Manager. The DS8000 I/O Priority Manager enables more effective storage consolidation and performance management combined with the ability to align quality of service (QoS) levels to separate workloads in the system. With DS8000 I/O Priority Manager, the system can prioritize access to system resources to achieve the volume's desired QoS based on defined performance goals (high, medium, or low) of any volume. I/O Priority Manager constantly monitors and balances system resources to help applications meet their performance targets automatically, without operator intervention. Starting with DS8000 Licensed Machine Code (LMC) level R6.2, the DS8000 I/O Priority Manager feature supports open systems and IBM System z®. DS8000 I/O Priority Manager, together with IBM z/OS® Workload Manager (WLM), provides more effective storage consolidation and performance management for System z systems. Now tightly integrated with Workload Manager for z/OS, DS8000 I/O Priority Manager improves disk I/O performance for important workloads. It also drives I/O prioritization to the disk system by allowing WLM to give priority to the system's resources automatically when higher priority workloads are not meeting their performance goals. Integration with zWLM is exclusive to DS8000 and System z systems. The paper is aimed at those who want to get an understanding of the DS8000 I/O Priority Manager concept and its underlying design. This IBM® RedpaperTM publication provides information about the implementation and use of solid-state drives (SSDs) in IBM XIV® Storage System XIV Generation 3 (Gen3), running XIV software version 11.1.0 or later. In the XIV system, SSDs are used to increase the read cache capacity of the existing DRAM memory cache, and are not used for persistent storage. This paper begins with a high-level overview of the SSD implementation in XIV and a brief review of the SSD technology, with focus on the XIV system. It explains the SSD Caching design and implementation in XIV. Then it examines typical workloads that can benefit from the SSD Caching extension and introduces the tools and utilities to help you analyze and understand the workload. In particular, it highlights the block tracing facility that was designed and developed by IBM Research. Then this paper explains the process that authorized IBM services representatives use to install SSD Caching. It reviews the changes made to the XIV GUI and the XCLI to support SSD Caching. Finally this paper provides a listing of the new alert-generating events and monitoring options that are provided for SSD support. The XIV Storage System is a scalable enterprise storage system that is based on a grid array of hardware components. The IBM XIV® Storage System has a rich set of copy functions suited for various data protection scenarios that enable you to enhance your business continuance, disaster recovery, data migration, and online backup solutions. These functions allow point-in-time copies, known as snapshots and full volume copies, and also include remote copy capabilities in either synchronous or asynchronous mode. A three-site mirroring function is now available to further improve availability and disaster recovery capabilities. These functions are included in the XIV software and all their features are available at no extra charge.
