Das Handbuch bietet erstmalig eine Systematisierung der Forschungsstrategien und Methoden, mit denen qualitative Netzwerkanalysen durchgeführt werden können. Neben systematisierenden und konzeptionellen Beiträgen werden anhand von exemplarischen Studien methodische Designs qualitativer Netzwerkanalysen vorgestellt und grundlegende Probleme der Durchführung, Erhebung und Auswertung von qualitativen Netzwerkstudien erörtert.

Das Buch präsentiert ein Konzept informeller sozialer Beziehungen, das die strukturelle Ebene von Beziehungen systematisch mit der Akteursebene verbindet. Es bietet einen Rahmen für die Analyse sowohl von einzelnen Beziehungstypen, wie Eltern-Kind-Beziehung, Freundschaft, Nachbarschaft, als auch von ganzen Netzwerken.
