In July 1997, twenty-five of America's most influential journalists sat down to try and discover what had happened to their profession in the years between Watergate and Whitewater. What they knew was that the public no longer trusted the press as it once had. They were keenly aware of the pressures that advertisers and new technologies were putting on newsrooms around the country. E já vem com o rótulo de leitura obrigatória para todo profissional da comunicação - e para todo cidadão que perceba como sua vida, seus pensamentos e sua cultura são diretamente influenciados pelas notícias e pelo jornalismo disponível. A idéia do livro surgiu após um encontro realizado em Harvard em 1997, que reuniu 25 dos mais importantes jornalistas norte-americanos para discutir o que havia acontecido com o jornalismo entre Watergate (1974) e Whitewater (era Clinton). Foi criado o Comitê dos Jornalistas Preocupados, que, dois anos depois, idealizou, sob a batuta de Kovach e de Rosenstiel, 21 fóruns reunindo mais de 3 mil pessoas e 300 jornalistas para debater se e como a imprensa livre pode sobreviver. Chegou-se à conclusão de que a finalidade do jornalismo é definida pela função exercida pelas notícias na vida das pessoas.
