The legacy of Robert Mapplethorpe (1946 –1989) is rich and complicated, triggering controversy, polarizing critics, and providing inspiration for many artists who followed him. Mapplethorpe, one of the most influential figures of his time, today stands as an example to emerging photographers who continue to experiment with the boundaries and concepts of the beautiful. Robert Mapplethorpe: The Photographs offers a timely and rewarding examination of his oeuvre and influence. Drawing from the extraordinary collection jointly acquired in 2011 by the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art from The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, as well as the Mapplethorpe Archive housed at the Getty Research Institute, the authors were given the unique opportunity to explore new resources and present fresh perspectives. The result is a fascinating introduction to Mapplethorpe’s career and legacy, accompanied by a rich selection of illustrations covering the remarkable range of his photographic work. All of these beautifully integrated elements contribute to what promises to become an essential point of access to Mapplethorpe’s work and practice. This publication is issued on the occasion of the exhibition Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Mediumon view at both the J. The American photojournalist W. Eugene Smith revolutionized the photo-essay form with the works he published in Lifemagazine between 1948 and 1956. This monograph reproduces images from six classic sequences of this era: Country Doctor(1948), which portrays the selfless and sometimes frustrating work of a doctor in rural America; Spanish Village(1950), perhaps the most powerful photographic study of 1950s Spain; Nurse Midwife(1951), which examines the life of a black woman in the American south; A Man of Mercy(1954), which documents Dr. Albert Schweitzer's humanitarian work in Africa; Pittsburgh(1955), Smith's first freelance assignment, previously unpublished; and Minamata91971-1973), a photo-essay recording the effects caused by a mercury spill in a region inhabited by Japanese fishermen. Together, these six classic documents of twentieth-century photography affirm Smith as an impassioned conscience, with practical ends in mind for his work: "I put such passion and energy into my photographic work that, more than their being just for art's sake, I prefer to think that my photographs push someone to action, to do something, to solve something," he one wrote. This volume includes previously unpublished writings by Smith that elucidate his field techniques and guiding principles, as well as the memoir "A Walk to a Paradise Garden," which tells the tale of his most acclaimed photograph. W. Eugene Smith(1918-1978) was born in Wichita, Kansas. After graduating from high school he moved to New York and found work with Newsweek, who famously fired him because he refused to use a medium-format camera. Smith joined Lifemagazine in 1939, and accompanied American battalions on the offensive against Japan. In 1955 he joined Magnum, and throughout the following two decades produced numerous key works of photojournalism. Smith died from a stroke in 1978.

How film emerged in 19th-century Paris amid an array of social, political, artistic and technological innovations--with works by the Lumiere brothers, Mélies, Chéret and more City of Cinematraces film's evolution from an obscure entertainment to the most powerful art form of the 20th century. Placing cinema in the context of 19th-century Parisian visual culture, this book brings together posters, paintings, studio and documentary photography, and film stills that evoke Paris as a site of consumption, demonstrate early cinema's relationship with technology and the fine arts, and highlight local and global spaces of film production. It also examines the aspects of 19th-century visual culture that gave rise to cinema as a quintessentially modern medium with an eager audience. Aligning with French beliefs that the nation's culture would be democratized through consumption, cinema reinforced a set of assumptions about French cultural and political authority and disseminated these ideas to the rest of the world. Presented here are images of and from the street by Jean Béraud, Charles Marville, Jules Chéret and Auguste and Louis Lumière; the technological experimentation of Loïe Fuller, Émile Reynaud and Georges Méliès; and the plein-air observations of Camille Pissarro and the staged artifice of Jean-Leon Gerome--all of which can be considered alongside the prototype film studios of Georges Méliès, Gaumont and Pathé. At the dawn of the 20th century, cinema is as much, if not more, a way of appropriating the world. Through arresting images and incisive texts, this book examines the origins of cinema and its position as a global medium.
