Il va baisser la radio à l'autre bout de la pièce. Pendant un moment, je n'entends que le bruit de sa canne frappant le sol. Il reprend l'appareil. "Excusez-moi pour le retard. Qui est à l'appareil ?" Je le lui dis à nouveau. Il est heureux de m'entendre, dit-il, et content du match des Dodgers aussi. Son ton est extrêmement chaleureux. A l'époque de nos premières conversations, Wilder avait demandé s'il pourrait vérifier ses propos plus tard. Ignorant si cette requête est toujours valable, je lui propose de relire tout le manuscrit. Billy Wilder refuse immédiatement. Après toutes nos discussions sur tous ces films aux intrigues finement agencées, sur les personnages et les comédiens, après les explications de circonstances importantes ou mineures, les détails d'une vie bien remplie, et ses refus insistants d'accorder à tout cela une importance exagérée, il me laisse avec précisément ce qu'il a laissé au monde: un sens de l'humour doux-amer et très authentique.
