During the past 30 years, Canadian craft has grown dramatically. However, public perception and mainstream academic study of craft have yet to catch up. This multidisciplinary collection of 18 essays, presented at the symposium "Making and metaphor: a discussion of meaning in contemporary craft", illustrates the complex and significant role of contemporary craft in society. Historical analysis highlights how the fields of education, architecture and industrial design have influenced craft products and our perceptions of them.

This selection of one hundred and seventy five Icelandic-Canadian oral narratives contains folktales, legends, memorates, humorous anecdotes, tall tales, and simple accounts of daily events. The first fifty one narratives are grounded in the Old Country experience with the remainder reflecting Icelandic immigrant life in Canada.

The year 2000, a bench-mark date in Christian civilization, prompted researchers to offer a scholarly look at the significance of religion in our civilization, past and present. The religious factor is examined from various scientific viewpoints--ethnological, historical, sociological, archaeological. It is seen that God, or whatever one might prefer to call him, or her, has historically assumed many different shapes and sizes in our civilization and that his cultural presence has impacted significantly upon our culture, art, and way of thinking.

The centenary of Doukhobor settlement in Canada (1899-1999) marks a unique chapter in the story of this country and its peoples. In Spirit Wrestlers, twenty-six contributors from Canada, Russia, Japan, and the United States offer important insights into the legacy of the Doukhobors. The discussion ranges from Doukhobor philosophy and spirituality, song traditions, and history, to aspects of material culture - textile arts, dress, and furnishings - and museological concerns. Two submissions highlight findings of archival and bibliographical relevance. With its illustrations of Doukhobor artifacts from the collections of the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the book provides a useful survey of the Doukhobor experience.
