During 1995, wildlife agency personnel & volunteers conducted the sixth Canada-wide survey of peregrine falcons. The introduction to this report provides background on the life history of the peregrine falcon, the threats to its population, and the need for the 1995 survey. The main section presents survey results by province, territory, or region that include information on numbers of birds observed, numbers of breeding pairs & young, numbers of sites occupied, population trends compared to earlier surveys, survey methods, and factors influencing population size. The final section discusses the significance of the survey, the status of the peregrine falcon in Canada in 1995, survey limitations, and future management needs.

A monitoring study was initiated in the mid-1980s to determine the effects of future offshore oil and gas production on the birds that use the coastal areas of the Beaufort Sea. The primary objective of the five-year predevelopment phase of the study was to determine the natural annual fluctuations in the abundance, breeding effort, and breeding success of the study's indicator species, the red-throated loon Gavia stellata.

The Queen Maud Gulf Migratory Bird Sanctuary in the central Canadian Arctic is the breeding ground for most of the world's population of Ross' Geese, one of the least numerous species of geese in North America. Lesser Snow Geese, among the most abundant of geese, nest mainly in the eastern and western Canadian Arctic but also nest in association with Ross' Geese in the central Canadian Arctic. This report presents the results of a survey conducted in June using aerial photography to determine the numbers and geographical distribution of the two species of geese nesting in the sanctuary in 1982 and 1988. The results are related to earlier records and to the summer habitat of the geese and their southern distribution.

To improve delineation of the migration routes and wintering ground affinities of the various Lesser Snow Goose stocks and to clarify the interrelationships of the Wrangel Island, Western Canadian Arctic, and Central Canadian Arctic populations, an international marking-observation program was initiated in 1987. In Mexico, the growing importance of the Northern Highlands as a wintering area for Ross' Geese and the western Central Flyway population of Lesser Snow Geese emphasized the need to conduct field observations in that area. This project estimated the number of Ross' and Lesser Snow Geese on the principal wintering areas in the states of Durango and Chihuahua; determined the breeding ground origin of Lesser Snow Goose stocks overwintering in Mexico by measuring the ratio of marked to unmarked birds, and the ratio of blue to white-phase geese; determined the incidence and number of Ross' Geese among flocks of white geese; and assessed the quality and security of white goose wintering habitat, and identified wetland habitats of critical importance to waterfowl.
