This report is part of the Health and Social Care Inequalities Monitoring System (HSCIMS) and follows on from the HSCIMS report "Health and Social Care Inequalities Monitoring System: Life Expectancy Decomposition -- An overview of changes in Northern Ireland life expectancy 2001-03 to 2006-08" which was published in February 2011. Despite increases in life expectancy across all areas, the differential (or gap) between life expectancy estimates for those living in the most deprived areas in Northern Ireland compared with the overall NI average has continued to increase for males between 2001-03 and 2008-10. The female deprivation gap remained steady throughout the period. Similarly, the gap in life expectancy between those living in rural areas and NI as a whole has also increased over the period. This report details how trends in mortality by age and cause of death explain recent changes in life expectancy and life expectancy gaps.
