Cosa accadde quando in piena Grande Depressione, ad Abalone, Arizona, piantò le tende il circo itinerante e sinistro del vecchio mago cinese Dr. Lao? Sfoderando ogni sorta di animale ibrido e creatura surreale, lo strambissimo caravanserraglio suscita nei sonnolenti abitanti della provincia dapprima curiosità, poi diffidenza, infine indifferenza. Eppure gli animali in mostra sono non già banali tigri o elefanti, ma creature rarissime e mai vedute: sirena, chimera, sfinge ermafrodita, serpente di mare, lupa mannara… E poi il mago Apollonio di Tiana, un carnalissimo Pan, pastorelle e ninfe, vergini da immolare, gli dèi Yottle e Bel-Marduk… Tutti trofei d’antiche conquiste: belve, superuomini e leggende semiumane resuscitate dall’antichità. Ma le prosaiche domande di una spiegazione scientifica da parte dei pragmatici cittadini di Abalone rimarranno categoricamente disattese dal camaleontico ed elusivo Dr. Lao, tanto che nel Catalogo-bestiario finale – uno strabiliante extra-testo di un postmodernismo ante litteram che anticipa il maestrale “Indice” del ballardiano Febbre di guerra – troveremo anche la voce “Interrogativi, contraddizioni e curiosità”. Ma non indugiate oltre: venite, dal primo all’ultimo!
