Africa has been and currently is the site of numerous conflicts and crises. Authors previously wrote of these as specifically African problems or the problems of Europeans in Africa, but newer scholarship on other aspects of Africa has come to stress the interconnectness of Africa and the wider world. Still, it has often been limited to studies of isolated instances within African countries, with little-to-no connection to greater patterns of international power and violence. This volume explores the historical and present local and international dimensions of the myriad security crises in Africa, from the role of international relations during liberation to multination efforts against piracy.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), inhuman conditions within its vast mining industry, and endemic corruption at the highest levels of government are hardly uncommon. But when native son, Jean Amani, rises to the role of minister of mines in the mineral rich Katanga province, he vows to advocate for workers’ rights and expose the industry’s unscrupulous dealings. Jean’s investigations are quickly curtailed when he dies in a car crash. It’s just another soon-forgotten tragedy in this region of the world. But not to Lily, Jean’s daughter with his wife, Laura, a descendent of the Janssens, one of the region’s founding Belgian families. To cope with her grief, Lily enrols in journalism school in Montreal, Canada, where she befriends André Fortin, a freelance photojournalist, and Logan Taylor, scion of the Taylor Media Group. The trio teams up to make a documentary about the mining industry in the DRC. Lily’s sole motivation, however, is uncovering what truly happened to her father. Lily’s Story is a tale about romance and power, one reveals the profound injustices often suffered by citizens in resource-rich African countries.

Excerpt from Christ's Tenderness Towards the Fallen: A Sermon Preached in S. Paul's Church, Knightsbridge, for the Church Penitentiary Association, on Tuesday, May 30, 1865 Holy scripture is a record, from its beginning to its end, of the goodness of God on the one hand, and of His severity on the other. Fruitless attempts have been made, in different ages of the Church, to dissociate those two essential charac teristics of the Godhead, and to represent the view of that severity exhibited to us in the Bible as incompatible with His attribute of mercy; to deduce from His paternal ten derness and affection the conclusion that the vehement de nunciations of wrath therein recorded, and the actual inﬂiction of desolating judgments, are but the outbreaks of human passion, and not the expression of the deliberate will and counsel of the Almighty. This style of criticism has hitherto been confined principally to the manifestation of the Divine attributes as exhibited in the Old Testament history. But if there be any just foundation for such strictures, they will be equally applicable to much of the language familiar to us under that covenant which may be most justly styled the Co venant of Mercy and of Love. How stern and unrelenting would seem to be the threatening anticipations of future woe and destruction to the doomed inhabitants of the Land of Promise from the lips of the meek and merciful Saviour! Famine, pestilence, earthquake, are but the beginning of their sorrows; for upon these scourges was to follow such great tribulation as was not since the beginning of the worldto that time, no, nor ever shall be - such carnage that, except those days were shortened, no ﬂesh could be saved. It is the loving Saviour - it is the merciful High Priest who fore warns those that will not part with their cherished sin, that in another world their worm will never die - their fire never be quenched; that their whole body shall be cast into hell, with its everlasting ﬂames. He it was who, though full of compassion for man's infirmity, could, nevertheless, address to the hypo critical Pharisees the withering question, 'ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?' Such is the tone in which He who was meek and lowly of heart could threaten the impenitent sinner; such are the terrors with which He would alarm all who harden themselves against His word, and resist the movements of His Holy Spirit. And yet, from those same lips could proceed assurances of the most tender compassion, promises of comfort and support - the offspring of a loving heart - ever ready to welcome the first tokens of contrition and self - abasement, and to pour the balm of consolation on the wounded spirit. Such, then, is the God, and such the Saviour, whom the Word of' Inspiration has revealed to us l - that God, unknown to the most civilised nations of the old world, who were ever seeking if haply they might find Him, but never could find, by the aid of their unenlightened conscience - that God whom mo dern enlightenment would invite us to picture to ourselves, from our own conscience, no matter what the portrait may be which the Holy Scripture presents to us of Him, thus throwing us back upon natural religion, and bidding us refuse all such illustrations of His own character as Jehovah Himself has given us in His heaven-sent mission to man. Tintagel is a grand and spectacular site on the Cornish coast; its name conjures up Arthurian legend and it has been much visited and written about since the Middle Ages. The site consists of the Island; the castle; and the church and churchyard each with its own history, some of which is only partly known. The author, Charles Thomas, is excavating at Tintagel and in this book he brings all the strands together, deciphering the clues, deconstructing some of the myths and building a model of this multi-faceted site.

English Heritage Book of Tintagel

Stone inscriptions are the most important written source for 5th-7th century western-British history. Against a background for Old World prehistory and the classical civilizations, this book focuses on the inscribed memorial stones of Demetia (south-west Wales, modern-day Dyfed) and Dumnonia (Devon, Cornwall and part of Somerset). The author looks at cultural change after AD 400 by analyzing the evidence or "messages" left on memorial stones. The invention of the ogam script in Ireland and its use, with implications for both paganism and Christianity, on such stones is examined. A group of chapters is devoted to a praticular reconstruction of events in south-west Wales between AD 400 and 600 - the establishment of an Irish-decended kingdom of Dementia. The author demonstrates that the Dementians adopted first Latinity (use of Roman names, ets) and only then Christinity, influenced by sub-Roman native kingdoms to the east. The author then traces a remarkable "venture to the interior" - the foundation of a small Dementian kingdom in the upper Usk valley, and examines documentary evidence for the first settler-king - Brychan - and, as monk and saint, his connection with Lundy Island (in the Bristol Channel) and north Devon. Evidence for a post-Roman native kingdom in Cornwall, Devon and part of Somerset is next considered, as is minor Irish settlement in west Cornwall around the year 400, and an isolated introduction of Christianity from 5th-century Gaul. Inscribed stones show that the conversion of Dumnonia to Christianity - though field-work has revealed that, far from being a Land of Saints, the deep south-west did not become Christian until well into the 6th century.
