Accablée de dettes, Liese Campbell a décidé de se faire passer pour une prostituée auprès d'Alexander, un riche homme d'affaires. Employée d'une agence immobilière à Melbourne, elle a ainsi pris l'habitude de le retrouver depuis plusieurs mois, entre deux rendez-vous professionnels, dans des appartements en location pour s'adonner à des jeux érotiques copieusement rémunérés. Alexander ne sait rien du double rôle de Liese, et semble d'ailleurs s'éprendre peu à peu d'elle. Quant à Liese, même si l'argent qu'il lui offre étouffe ses scrupules, elle commence à éprouver un certain malaise par rapport au rôle qu'elle s'est façonnée, qui l'oblige à mystifier son passé et à redoubler de prudence. Résolue à quitter l'Australie, elle accepte toutefois la proposition d'Alexander de passer un weekend dans sa grande propriété agricole au milieu du bush. La perspective ne l'enchante guère, mais là-encore, la somme qu'il lui promet pour les deux jours passés en sa compagnie achèvent de la convaincre. Pourtant, au moment de leur départ pour les terres sauvages, l'attitude d'Alexander éveille d'emblée la méfiance de Liese. Il se montre en effet curieusement sombre et taciturne : ses attentes ne seront pas exactement celles qu'elle avait anticipées pour ses derniers jours en terre australienne... S'ensuit alors le récit des deux journées au cours desquelles la tension va crescendo. Entre récit érotique et thriller psychologique, Chloe Hooper fait peu à peu tomber les masques et construit un jeu de domination de plus en plus complexe. La grande demeure de style victorien en constitue le décor particulièrement dérangeant. Sous sa couche de poussière, il trahit un passé familial obscur et ne tarde pas à perdre Liese dans ses innombrables pièces froides. Prise à son propre piège, elle acquiert rapidement la conviction qu'elle ne parviendra pas à s'échapper de ce lieu reculé... Le comportement chaste et autoritaire d'Alexander, les lettres intrigantes qu'il reçoit, les robes démodées découvertes dans une chambre... Les mystères qui entourent le riche et séduisant propriétaire sont décidément nombreux. Mystères auxquels vient s'ajouter le doute quant aux intentions précises de Liese elle-même : pourquoi cherche-t-elle à le séduire envers et contre tout? Son inaction, son aveuglement parfois, sont-ils dus à un désir incontrôlable ou à sa peur panique ? Ses impressions relèvent-elles de la paranoïa ? Le lecteur ne peut en aucun cas se fier totalement au récit de la narratrice, et l'immersion dans ses pensées se fait, à l'image de la maison, de plus en plus étouffante. Parachevant cette atmosphère de sourde menace, Chloe Hooper plante un décor romanesque singulier : celui du bush australien, mystérieux et sauvage. Dans ce troisième roman imprégné de sensualité et de suspens, Hooper explore avec talent le territoire des pulsions, le thème du jeu avec les identités et les désirs. Se dérobant toujours en partie à la compréhension du lecteur, les deux personnages sont à la fois angoissants et fascinants dans leurs ambivalences. Et ce jusqu'au final énigmatique auquel mènent les dernières pages, haletantes.
