Ayant perdu son emploi au Pony Express en 1877, Martha reprend une vie d’errance et de petits boulots (cuisinière dans des ranchs, infirmière, lingère...) Au fur et à mesure des rencontres, généralement bien arrosées, n’hésitant pas à jouer du poing ou du fusil, elle forge sa propre légende qui sera bientôt amplifiée par la parution d’un article d’Horacio Maguire sur les exploits de celle que l’on surnomme Calamity Jane. Femme libre, alcoolique, rebelle, volontaire, elle refuse de participer au cirque ambulant de Buffalo Bill, mais participera quelques années plus tard au Wild West Show. Elle entreprend l’écriture des lettres à sa fille en 1879, ce qui permettra des années plus tard au grand public de découvrir une Calamity Jane plus intime. C’est cependant une tout autre femme que nous font découvrir aujourd’hui les auteurs de Martha Jane Cannary...
