The 'new art' of the late 1960s was shown in two landmark exhibitions in 1969: Op Losse Schroeven and When Attitudes Become Form. This book reveals how each brought together Arte Povera, Anti-Form, Conceptual and Land art, whilst challenging such categories and introducing innovative curatorial approaches. Christian Rattemeyer offers a rich comparative analysis of the two exhibitions, exploring the related but differing approaches of the two curators – Wim Beeren and Harald Szeemann – in two distinct institutional settings: the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Kunsthalle Bern. Numerous installation photographs enable a virtual 'walk through' of each exhibition, while meticulous chronologies detail the negotiations that shaped them. Crucial texts from the time are complemented by new research and fascinating recent interviews with participating artists. Included are interviews with Marinus Boezem, Jan Dibbets, Ger van Elk, Piero Gilardi and Richard Serra. Along with other major artists of his time like Joseph Beuys, Walter de Maria, or Robert Smithson, Lothar Baumgarten significantly extended the bounds of the art of the 1960s, particularly through his exploration with and in his reflections on the source of "nature." However, unlike his American colleagues who oriented themselves on the power of reality, Lothar Baumgarten challenged the Eurocentric view and, alternating between research and documentation, openly confronted the unknown site-specific "other" of a given location. Again and again he tracked down the phantom of "nature" within culture through his ephemeral, three-dimensionally materialized comments, drawings, photographs, slide projections, films, and documentary sound recordings. In long-term projects he developed presentation spaces that primarily explored different cultural systems and their specific conceptions of space and time.

Compass in Hand brings together approximately 250 works from the Judith Rothschild Foundations extraordinary gift of drawings to The Museum of Modern Art, in 2005. Formed by Harvey S. Shipley Miller, the Foundations trustee, the collection comprises over 2,500 works on paper by more than 650 artists and was conceived to be the widest possible cross-section of contemporary drawing made primarily within the past twenty years. An extended essay by Christian Rattemeyer highlights the primary curatorial concepts and categories of the collection and a conversation between Harvey S. Shipley Miller and Gary Garrels, former Chief Curator of the Department of Drawings at MoMA, recounts the objectives and processes through which the collection was originally formed, providing a unique panorama on the state of drawing today.
