Das Buch entwirft eine bildkulturwissenschaftliche Perspektive auf die Frage nach den wechselseitigen Abhängigkeiten von Bild und Kunst, die in unserer Gegenwart in eine "Verkunstung" der Welt münden. Untersucht wird die Einwirkung von Bildern der Kunst auf exemplarische Bildkulturen in einem Zeitraum vom Beginn des Kunstbegriffs im 14. Jahrhundert bis in die Gegenwart.
