Christo and Jeanne-Claude

Christo and Jeanne-Claude are renowned, above all, for their temporary, monumental interventions in landscapes and cities. Fabric is a defining feature of their projects, which they use to wrap, conceal or otherwise manipulate buildings or landscapes. The oil barrel sculptures and installations which they created since the beginning of their careers are just as numerous, though less well known. In the late 1950s, Christo started to wrap used oil drums which he had found on scrapyards or bought cheaply at recycling sites. Later, he began piling up the untreated oil drums to form ever larger structures. The largest project of this kind to date is a giant sculpture made up of 410,000 oil drums in the desert of the United Arab Emirates. The project has been developing since 1977, and ever since the death of Jeanne-Claude in 2009 Christo has continued it on his own. This book, published to accompany the large exhibition at Fondation Maeght in the south of France, shows many photos and pictures of works, some of which have never been published before. They offer a comprehensive insight into Christo and Jeanne-Claude's oil drum projects. Significantly, it contains a detailed documentation of a sculpture specially created by Christo for the famous Giacometti courtyard at Fondation Maeght. Christo & Jeanne-Claude

In February 2005, Christo and Jeanne-Claude will complete a monumental work of art in New York City's Central Park. The project, first conceived in 1979, will feature 7500 16-foot-high vinyl gates lining the park's paths, from which will hang saffron-colored fabric panels. TASCHEN will document this project from start to finish in two editions. A first edition will be published in January 2005, containing photo documents and preparatory drawings for The Gates. This edition, published directly after the installation has been realized, will contain 32 extra pages showing photographs of the completed work of art.

Iconic images from 50 years of transforming cities Christo (born 1935) and Jeanne-Claude (1935-2009) have always compared their work to that of urban planners. And it is true that the projects they have carried out around the world since the 1960s not only have huge dimensions but are also at the center of public debates and disputes. The very fact that their projects are subject to approval by local authorities makes them sometimes resemble public construction projects more than works of art. It presents preparatory drawings, collages and models for many little-known works from the artists' early career, some of which were never carried out, such as the planned wrapping of several New York City skyscrapers, as well as the spectacular large-scale projects of later years, such as the wrapping of the Pont Neuf bridge in Paris in 1985, the wrapping of the Reichstag building in Berlin in 1995 and the 2005 installation The Gates in New York's Central Park. In two detailed essays, the authors of the book explore Christo's extraordinary talent for drawing and investigate the artists' ambivalent perspective on urban space, which oscillates between a powerful critique of the city's impersonal modernism and a tribute to the liberal, democratic use of urban areas.
