Ferdinand Christian Baur (1792-1860) has been described as "the greatest and at the same time the most controversial theologian in German Protestant theology since Schleiermacher." The controversy was epitomized by a nineteenth-century British critic who wrote that his theory "makes of Christianity a thing of purely natural origin, calls in question the authenticity of all but a few of the New Testament books, and makes the whole collection contain not a harmonious system of divine truth, but a confused mass of merely human and contradictory opinions as to the nature of the Christian religion." The contributors to this volume, however, regard Baur as an epoch-making New Testament scholar whose methods and conclusions, though superseded, have been mostly affirmed during the century and a half since his death. This collection focuses on the history of early Christianity, although as a historian of the church and theology Baur covered the entire field up to own time. He combined the most exacting historical research with a theological interpretation of history influenced by Kant, Schelling, and Hegel. The first three chapters discuss Baur's relation to Strauss, Möhler, and Hegel. Then a central core of chapters considers his historical and exegetical perspectives (Judaism and Hellenism, Gnosticism, New Testament introduction and theology, the Pauline epistles, the Synoptic Gospels, John, the critique of miracle, and the combination of absoluteness and relativity). The final chapters view his influence by analyzing the reception of Baur in Britain, Baur and Harnack, and Baur and practical theology. This work offers a multi-faceted picture of his thinking, which will stimulate contemporary discussion.

English summary: Matthew 9:9-13 is a paradigmatic text for the soteriology of the Gospel of Matthew, which differs significantly from the other New Testament concepts. In this work, Christof Landmesser gives an exact linguistic and historical analysis of this pericope in the context of the entire Gospel of Matthew. In order to understand the text, it is important to be aware of the references to the Old Testament. The author shows that in Matthew there is talk of a secondary conditioning of salvation.The disciple is required to commit himself completely to God. Thus the connection between soteriology and Christology proves to be highly significant for current theological theory formation. German description: Die Soteriologie des Matthausevangeliums unterscheidet sich signifikant von anderen neutestamentlichen Entwurfen. Gemeinsam mit allen anderen neutestamentlichen Autoren sieht der Verfasser des Matthausevangeliums das eschatologische Heil mit der Person Jesus Christus unloslich verbunden. Die Soteriologie muss demnach im Zusammenhang mit der Christologie bedacht werden. Zwei Komponenten erweisen sich fur die matthaische Soteriologie als grundlegend: die Jungerberufung durch Jesus und die von den Jungern daraufhin geforderte umfassende Zuwendung zu Gott, wodurch das Heil nach dem Verfasser des Matthausevangeliums sekundar konditioniert wird. Christof Landmesser zeigt an weiteren Texten, wie grundlegend diese sekundare Konditionierung des Heils fur die Soteriologie des Matthausevangeliums ist. Zuletzt wird die Frage nach der Propositionalitat der matthaischen Soteriologie gestellt, wodurch die Relevanz der diskutierten Texte fur die gegenwartige theologische Theoriebildung erkennbar wird.

Die Autoren der Beiträge in diesem Band interpretieren in historischen, exegetischen und hermeneutischen Untersuchungen Aussagen des Neuen Testaments über das Endgültige gegenüber allem Vorläufigen. Die verschiedenen eschatologischen Vorstellungen erhellen zugleich theologische Grundentscheidungen. In allen diesen Texten ist das Verhältnis eschatologischer Vorstellungen zum Christusgeschehen entscheidend. Das Verständnis der Zeit und der Geschichte mit Blick auf ihr Ende, die Frage nach der Auferstehung und nach dem Gericht, nach der endgültigen Versöhnung und der Gottesgemeinschaft sowie nach der spannungsreichen gegenwärtigen eschatologischen Existenz sind damit verbundene Themen. Die individuellen, die universalen und die kosmischen Dimensionen der Eschatologie werden vor ihrem traditions- und religionsgeschichtlichen Hintergrund so entfaltet, dass ihre theologische Bedeutung erhellt wird. The authors of the contributions in this volume interpret statements of the New Testament concerning the final things as opposed to all things provisional in historical, exegetical, and hermeneutical investigations. The various eschatological ideas elucidate at the same time basic theological decisions. In all these texts, the relationship between eschatological ideas and the Christ-event is decisive. The understanding of time and history with regard to its end, the question of the resurrection and judgment, the final reconciliation and divine community as well as the intense contemporary eschatological existence are related issues. The individual, the universal, and the cosmic dimensions of eschatology are developed in such a way that their theological significance is illuminated in the light of their tradition-historical and religio-historical background.

[Does Man Need Salvation?] The question of whether a human being needs salvation is central to Christianity. A "no" would mean his or her end. That is why this volume focuses on demonstrating the need for salvation of the individual in his or her entire reality of life.
