The photographer Margarete Freudenstadt has dedicated herself to documenting the forgotten and bygone places of cinema. In an exciting dialogue, Cinemas juxtaposes her melancholic pictures of movie theaters in the former East Germany after the fall of the Wall with photos of the opulent but crumbling film palaces of today's Cuba. In the early 1990s Freudenstadt traveled to eastern Germany to document the remaining movie theaters there, which had a distinctive architecture and style, but eventually succumbed to competition from the modern multiplex. More recently, Freudenstadt traveled to Cuba to document its colorful cinemas, many of which were built during a boom in popularity during the 1950s under American influence. In East Germany, cinemas were auspiciously named "Progress Movie Theater" or "Film Theater Kosmos," while in Cuba they are given names like "Riviera," "Acapulco," or "Florida." In both locales, Freudenstatdt's photos capture what remains of the cinemas' splendor, while presenting striking images of the theaters' contemporary surroundings. This volume unites both photo series for the first time, showing that these sometimes abandoned places still retain the magic of cinema.

Vor mehr als 20 Jahren, im Mai 1990, legte die damals 28jährige Angela Ricardi im Dom zu Speyer vor dem Bischof die Beichte ab. Sie plagte eine schwere Gewissensnot und sie war dem Selbstmord nahe. Der Bischof verstand ihre Lage und wurde aktiv, um ihr einen Ausweg zu ermöglichen. Am 29.September 2012 brannte im syrischen Bürgerkrieg der weltberühmte Basar von Aleppo nieder. Zwei junge Männer, die das Inferno schwerverletzt überstanden hatten, lernten sich zufällig im Krankenhaus kennen. Der eine hatte seinen Vater, der andere seine beiden Kinder verloren. Sie eint der Hass auf Assad. Sie schmieden einen Plan, ihn zu vernichten. Der eine von ihnen hatte in Heidelberg studiert. Er glaubte, dort bekommen zu können, was sie für ihren Plan brauchten. Im Dezember 2012 saß ein Student im Hörsaal 2 des Psychologischen Seminars der Uni Heidelberg und konnte den Ausführungen des Professors nicht wirklich folgen. Ihn trieb eine Frage um: Wer bin ich eigentlich? Er machte sich auf die Suche und wurde fündig. Doch was er fand, ließ ihn zu Tode erschrecken. Er wusste: In Zukunft würde nichts mehr so sein wie bisher. Diese drei Ereignisse verbinden sich zu einer hochexplosiven Gemengelage. Am 31. Mai 2013 finden Wanderer im Wald hinter Heidelberg-Ziegelhausen eine verstümmelte Frauenleiche. Sie wird wenig später als jene Angela Ricardi identifiziert, die uns schon am Anfang der Geschichte begegnet ist. Sie hieß mittlerweile Wendlandt und war Richterin am Landgericht. Schnell wird ein Verdächtiger festgenommen und es scheint ein ganz "normaler" Mordfall zu werden, wäre da nicht der Terminkalender des Opfers, der eine ganze Reihe gänzlich unverständlicher Einträge enthält. Lange tappt das Ermittlerteam völlig im Dunkeln und kann nicht verhindern, dass innerhalb weniger Tage fünf Menschen tot sind und zwei Kinder entführt. Dabei entgeht Hauptkommissar Travniczek bei einem nächtlichen Einsatz selbst nur knapp dem Tod.

The pictorial turn in the humanities and social sciences has foregrounded the political power of images and the extent to which historical, political, social, and cultural processes and practices are shaped visually. Political iconographies are taken to interpret norms of actions, support ideological formations, and enhance moral concepts. Visual rhetorics are understood as active players in the construction and contestation of the political realm and public space. The twenty-one articles by scholars from Europe and the United States explore the political function and cultural impact of images from the perspectives of Art History, American Studies, Visual Culture Studies, History, and Political Science. The contributions in particular address the complex interplay between agent and addressee in the public space as well as issues of national identity, discourses of inclusion and exclusion, and the designation of political spaces within transnational contexts. Das Kunstmuseum Bern und der Martin-Gropius-Bau Berlin widmen von November 2012 bis Ende Juli 2013 den bedeutenden Schweizer Künstlern Johannes Itten und Paul Klee eine Ausstellung, die erstmals die künstlerische Auseinandersetzung beider mit dem Thema der Farbe in vergleichenden Gegenüberstellungen fokussiert: Die Ausstellung führt in fünf grossen Etappen, gruppiert um prominente Schlüsselwerke, in den Farbkosmos von Itten und Klee und ihre Überlegungen zu den Aspekten Farbe und Esoterik, Farbaura, Farbharmonie, Farbe und Abstraktion oder Farbe und Natur ein.
