An Iranian Town in Transition deals with the social and economic history of Tabriz, a town in north-west Iran and the centre of the historical province Azerbaijan. The focus of this study is on the notables of the town in an epoch of fundamental change that stretches from the mid-eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century. Far from narrating a simple history of events, the study addresses major questions related to endowments (waqf), the workings of the Shiite judiciary, urban and provincial administration, the changing role of the 'ulama, and tenure of landed property in concrete case-studies. With its wide perspective on developments in urban society, the study interprets the process of social change in the transitional period from the Zands to the Qajars as a crucial starting point for the modern history of Iran. Stressing the importance of indigenous sources for this period, the author drew heavily on hitherto neglected Persian archival material. A large number of documents, deeds, and court protocols are included in critical edition in the appendix.

Culture and Cultural Politics Under Reza Shah presents a collection of innovative research on the interaction of culture and politics accompanying the vigorous modernization programme of the first Pahlavi ruler. Examining a broad spectrum of this multifaceted interaction it makes an important contribution to the cultural history of the 1920s and 1930s in Iran, when, under the rule of Reza Shah Pahlavi, dramatic changes took place inside Iranian society. With special reference to the practical implementation of specific reform endeavours, the various contributions critically analyze different facets of the relationship between cultural politics, individual reformers and the everyday life of modernist Iranians. Interpreting culture in its broadest sense, this book brings together contributions from different disciplines such as literary history, social history, ethnomusicology, art history, and Middle Eastern politics. In this way, it combines for the first time the cultural history of Iran’s modernity with the politics of the Reza Shah period. Empirische Untersuchungen liefern Erkenntnisse zur Funktion des Traums, zu den Wirkungen von Ereignissen am Tag vor dem Traum, so genannten Tagesresten, zur Bedeutung frühkindlicher Erlebnisse im Rahmen des Traumgeschehens sowie im Hinblick auf Freuds Theorie der partiellen Wunscherfüllung im Traum. Im Gegensatz zu jüngeren Annahmen über zufällig zustande kommende Trauminhalte zeigt sich klar ein Zusammenhang des Trauminhalts mit der Persönlichkeit des Träumers.Ein weiterer Abschnitt behandelt die - schwierige - empirische Überprüfung der freudschen Theorie der Fehlleistungen. Die Methode der experimentellen Induktion sprachlicher Fehlleistungen hat zu einem klaren Beleg des Einflusses unbewusster Motive auf die Fehlleistung geführt. Mit völlig anderer Methodik konnte auch ein Bezug unbewusster Motivation zu tödlichen Autounfällen empirisch gestützt werden.
