Eheschließung, Scheidung, Zugang zu Vermögen während und nach der Ehe: All dies war über die Jahrhunderte durch kirchliche und zivile Ordnungen strukturiert. Das Recht nahm damit sehr direkt Einfluss auf die persönliche Lebenspraxis. Obwohl das 19. Jahrhundert von zunehmender Rechtsvereinheitlichung gekennzeichnet war, bestanden vor allem in größeren territorialen Zusammenhängen partikulare Rechte weiter fort. Dies konnte Handlungsoptionen eröffnen – in zahlreichen Fällen führte jedoch nur ein Wechsel in einen anderen Rechtsraum zum erwünschten Ziel, zum Beispiel einer Scheidung oder einer Wiederverheiratung. Differente Zugehörigkeiten konnten umgekehrt heiratswillige Paare vor große Herausforderungen stellen. An den Schnittstellen zwischen verschiedenen Rechtslogiken fragen die Beiträge nach Handlungsräumen von Männern und Frauen und nach den damit verbundenen Geschlechternormen. Marriage, divorce, access to property during and after marriage, all this was structured over the centuries by ecclesiastical and civil provisions. Law thus had a very direct influence on personal life. The nineteenth century in particular was characterized by increasing legal unification, but particular rights continued to exist in larger territorial contexts. This legal heterogeneity as well as migration between different jurisdictional spaces could open up new possibilities to act. Conversely, different affiliations in regard to confession or ethnicity could pose great challenges for couples willing to marry. The aim of this issue is to ask at the interfaces between different legal logics about the spheres of action of men and women and the associated gender norms.

Geschlecht und Emotion werden allzu oft in stereotypen Bildern gedacht. Vor einem solchen Hintergrund geht es in diesem Heft um Mehrdeutigkeiten und Abweichungen, das heißt um das dynamische Wechselspiel von Geschlecht und Emotion. Die Beiträge begreifen dabei weder Geschlecht noch Emotion als konsistente Kategorien, sondern als Phänomene in Bewegung, die immer wieder neu entstehen. Diese Fluidität kann zusätzlich Raum schaffen oder individuelles Handeln und Fühlen beschränken, was an Beispielen aus Zambia, der Türkei, Indien und Sowjetrussland sichtbar wird. Fluidity, in these essays comes in several forms and registers: as ambivalence, circulation and divergence. Our essays explore the interface between the social and the individual as well as the points of tension or cohesion that appear in ways of feeling (out of) gender. In bringing fluidity to the centre of our analysis, this special issue advances an understanding of gender, emotions and their interactions as phenomena in motion and in the process of becoming, rather than fixed. With a geographical scope encompassing Zambia, Turkey, Soviet Russia and India, and drawing on archival histories, individual biographies, ethnographies and explorations of popular culture, we elaborate how gender categories are strengthened, disturbed or made ambivalent by emotions.

Fluid Feelings

The volume focuses on emerging 'rooms for manoeuvre' in the socialist societies of Central and Eastern Europe after the Second World War. Unlike other works, these areas of activity are not viewed as isolated spheres where citizens could act independently from political and societal constraints. They are rather conceptualized here as geographical, social or institutional spaces whose existence was either outside of political control or more or less intentionally allowed by authorities and other decision-makers. The contributions investigate how East Germans, Poles, Romanians, Slovaks and Czechs coped with the limitations of socialist reality. How did they adopt and successfully adapt given norms to their own specific interests? To what extent were the resulting 'rooms for manoeuvre' not only essential aspects of the state socialist system, but even necessary to stabilize it?
