"Du hast keine Chance, aber nutze sie" – diese populär gewordene sprichwörtliche Paradoxie hat bei Herbert Achternbusch auch eine werkpolitisch programmatische Funktion. So motiviert das unlösbare, ästhetisch produktive Dilemma seine Poetik der Verhüllung und Enthüllung und damit sein Gesamtwerk. Die Beiträge berühren die medienästhetischen Konsequenzen der Poetik und Werkpolitik von 'Verhüllung' und 'Offenbarung' auf vielfältige Weise und beleuchten aus verschiedenen werkspezifischen Perspektiven insbesondere auch ihre filmischen Realisationen in vier Bereichen: politischen und mythologischen, in Diskursen über Religion, Theologie und Kirche, in Diskursen über 'Fremdheit' und 'Heimat', im selbstreflexiven Diskurs über Kunst, also über Sprache, Bilder und Filme, über Autorschaft, Werkstiftung und den Literatur- und Theaterbetrieb sowie die Filmwirtschaft selbst.

Following the volumes »Literature and Crime« (1983, STSL 8) and »Crime Narrated« (1991, STSL 27) the articles assembled here examine discourses serving the social construction of deviation, criminality, and justice/jurisdiction together with typical constellations of the way these have been representeed by the (mass) media in the 20th century. In addition, theoretical articles on the connection between 'transgression' and 'order' on the basis of recent research into the representation of crime and crime-fighting institutions in Germany and the United States are joined by contributions on the criminological, juridical, and political discourses of the present to assist in placing the case studies in their systematic and historical context.
