Customer expectations and international competition are obliging car and commercial vehicle manufacturers to produce more efficient and cleaner products in shorter product cycle times. The consideration of Engine Tribology has a leading role to play in helping to achieve these goals. Specific areas of interdisciplinary interest include: design influences on fuel economy and emissions; new materials (ceramics, steels, coatings, lubricants, additives); low viscosity lubricants; and low heat rejection (adiabatic) engines. This volume gives a detailed and current review on some basic features of tribology particularly associated with internal combustion engines such as: lubrication analysis relevant to plain bearings, Hertzian contact theory and elastohydrodynamic lubrication associated with cams and followers and friction and wear in a general context. Several chapters examine engine bearings, valve trains, (cams and followers) and piston assemblies. For each machine element a background introduction is followed by design interpretations and a consideration of future developments. The important topic of materials, solids and lubricants is focused upon in the concluding chapters. The work will be of interest to engineers and researchers in the automobile, automotive products, petroleum and associated industries.

On previous occasions each Symposium has focused attention on a current and significant research topic, usually reflecting the interests of the Leeds or Lyon research groups, however this time the main focus was on the vitally important subject of technology transfer, providing the 154 delegates from 21 countries with the rare opportunity to discuss the impact of their studies on machine design.

Tribological Design of Machine Elements

The Running-In Process in Tribology is a collection of papers presented during the 8th Leeds-Lyon Symposium on Tribology held in the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon, France in September 1981. The symposium was attended by 87 delegates from 13 countries, which showed a great level of interest on the scientific and industrial problems of running-in. Twenty eight papers are presented in the book, covering basic thermodynamics, mechanics of continuous solids, metallurgy, polymers, profilometry, and surface physics. Major topics such as elastohydrodynamics, roughness, and thermal effects in tribology are discussed as well. Mechanical engineers and materials scientists will find the book very insightful.

The Running-In Process in Tribology

This important new reference work offers an outstanding collection of articles devoted to the discussion of "intracellular messengers". Extracellular stimuli ("first messengers") bind to receptors on the plasma membrane of cells to trigger changes in the concentration of intracellular messengers ("second messengers") which leads, in turn, to changes in cellular activity. However, the intracellular activities of so called "third messengers" may also be involved complicating the concept of a rigid sequence of events between receptor and response. The preference for the term "intracellular messengers", and, hence, the title of this volume, recognizes that a complex web of interactions between intercellular messengers determines the concentrations and ultimate effects of each.

Vehicle Tribology was chosen as the topic for the 17th Leeds-Lyon Symposium, as it was decided to be a timely opportunity to bring together experts of many disciplines connected with problems of emissions, particulates and energy efficiency associated with the automobile engine. Mechanics of Coatings was chosen as the topic for the 16th Leeds-Lyon Symposium, as it was decided to be a timely opportunity to bring together experts of many disciplines connected with coatings to find ways of extending the industrial use of these coatings particularly in the field of tribology. The Leeds-Lyon symposia have well established themselves in the tribological calendar. Industrial progress requires a better understanding of interfacial phenomena than now exists and it is exciting to see that the topics addressed in these proceedings volumes are at the forefront of progress in tribological research. These proceedings contain 61 papers written by authors from all over the world, covering the entire spectrum of wear particles. Of particular interest is the detailed consideration of a wide range of particle formations and detachments, as well as a close look at the physics and chemistry of the wear of mechanisms, together with other in-depth state-of-the-art analytical contributions.

The 66 papers in this volume provide reviews across the tribological field with thin films as their theme, giving a comprehensive and concise description on topics ranging from coatings and surface modification to bio-tribology. The articles provide the reader with an outline of their most effective application and potential uses in new technologies.
